Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the Tipton study to find Tipton seated in a high-backed chair, reading the Bible. Only Tipton's right arm is visible to the viewers]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : You know, Mike, there are many reasons why the Bible has always been the best seller of all time: for its profound, enduring religious importance, but also because it's a collection of the greatest stories in all the world.

Michael Anthony : That it is indeed, sir.

John Beresford Tipton : I have just been reading the story of a dream and a coat of many colors: the story of Joseph and his brethren.

[Tipton hands over an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : Our next millionaire is a brother - no Joseph, of course, but he has already endured a considerable trial, not to mention many adventures.

    [Anthony bows and departs]

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters a U.S. Marine Corp. barracks, searching for Peter Bartley]  Peter Bartley?

    Peter Bartley : That's right.

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony. I have an important matter to discuss with you in private. Is it all right here?

Peter Bartley : What's the matter with here?

    Michael Anthony : Nothing, Sergeant,

    [Looking around the empty barracks]

Michael Anthony : I just want to make sure that we're alone. As you'll see,

    [Opening briefcase to remove documents]

Michael Anthony : privacy is necessary to complete my business with you.

    [Hands a check to Bartley]

Michael Anthony : This is yours.

Peter Bartley : [Ignoring Anthony]  All right, mister, now I'm going to tell you one.

Michael Anthony : Look again, Sergeant. This is a cashier's check payable to you for $1,000,000. And the tax has already been paid.

Peter Bartley : A million dollars?

Michael Anthony : And it's all yours, under the condition that you tell no one the amount or the source. If you do, you will forfeit whatever remains.

    [Producing a document]

Michael Anthony : You merely have to sign this agreement.

Peter Bartley : [Looking at check]  It's a cashier's check. You're not kidding, are you?

Michael Anthony : No, Sergeant, I'm not kidding.

Peter Bartley : A million dollars. Wow!

Michael Anthony : [Chuckling]  Yes, this is rather unusual.

Peter Bartley : [Bartley signs the agreement and returns it to Anthony, who places it into his briefcase]  I'm taking a furlough - going home, for the first time since I've been in the Marines, more than 12 years.

Michael Anthony : You haven't seen your family in all that time?

Peter Bartley : Family? I haven't got one. I'm going home to my orphanage.

  • Michael Anthony : [Reviewing a case history, to the viewers]  The story of this 'brother', who was chosen to receive a million dollars, starts several years ago in a tragic, violent way.

  • [first lines]

Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony. For many years, I was executive secretary to the late multibillionaire John Beresford Tipton. Among my duties was the unique job of delivering $1,000,000, which Mr. Tipton frequently gave away, tax-free, to a total stranger. From his fabulous 60,000-acre estate, Silverstone, Mr. Tipton carried on his study of human nature. Every subject in his vast store of knowledge was material for close analysis and was always related to the behavior and destiny of man.
