Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters the Tipton study, to find Tipton seated in a high-backed chair with only his left arm visible to the viewers. To Tipton's left is a five-pointed star wheel]  You sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, do you believe a man under hypnosis can go back into his past life and actually relive it?

Michael Anthony : I'm certainly no authority, sir, but I do know such claims have been made.

John Beresford Tipton : I've been making some experiments in hypnotic science. Watch.

[Tipton turns on a bright light beside him and shines the star wheel directly into the face of Anthony]

Michael Anthony : [after several seconds of the light and wheel having a hypnotic effect on him, Anthony shakes it off]  Huh, very intriguing.

John Beresford Tipton : There's another little experiment I'd like to try, substituting, however, a million dollars for the hypnotic trance.

[Tipton hands over an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : There's our new millionaire, Mike.

    [Anthony bows and departs]

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony gets out of a cab and approaches a man gardening in his front yard]  Excuse me. Can you tell me where I can find Peter Marlowe?

Pete Marlowe : I'm Pete Marlowe.

Michael Anthony : Well, my name is Michael Anthony.

    [Looks around the yard]

Michael Anthony : Could we go inside where we will be alone?

Pete Marlowe : We can be alone out here.

[Marlowe leads Anthony to an out-of-the-way patio with lawn chairs]

Michael Anthony : [Anthony opens his briefcase and remove a check]  I have something for you, Mr. Marlowe. A cashier's check.

    Pete Marlowe : For what?

Michael Anthony : For a million dollars.

[Anthony hands the check to Marlowe, who scarcely looks at it]

Pete Marlowe : Who are you? And just what are you doing here, Mister...

[Anthony removes a document from his briefcase]

Michael Anthony : Michael Anthony. I came here to give you that. All you have to do is sign this paper, agreeing never to tell anyone.

Pete Marlowe : A million dollars? Who'd want to give me a million dollars?

Michael Anthony : Sorry, I cannot tell you that.

    [Offering the document]

Michael Anthony : Now, if you'll just sign this.

Pete Marlowe : [Staring at check]  I don't believe it.

Michael Anthony : It is true, however. It is yours, tax-free, with one stipulation. You must never reveal to anyone, except your wife if you should ever remarry, the source or amount of this check. If you do, the anonymous donor will reclaim whatever money is left.

Pete Marlowe : Mr. Anthony, if this check were good, maybe I could catch up with some of the lost years of my life. Maybe I could really do something for the one person who means more than anything to me.

Michael Anthony : I sincerely hope you do, Mr. Marlowe.

    [Marlowe signs the pledge]

  • [first lines]

Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony, and until his death, I was executive secretary to John Beresford Tipton, a multibillionaire, who had the strange hobby of giving away one million dollars, tax-free, to an individual who had never met him, who indeed had never even heard of him. This is Silverstone, John Beresford Tipton's 60,000-acre estate. Mr. Tipton was a man of amazingly wide interests - so wide that one never knew what to expect when called into his presence.

  • Michael Anthony : [Reviewing a case history, to the viewers]  Convicted of armed assault and robbery, Pete Marlowe was sent to a penitentiary for twenty years. He paid his penalty and now he was out, a free man. But also a man with a mission.
