- Michael Anthony: [Anthony enters a laboratory to witness Tipton, who is off-screen, holding two test tubes of liquids. Only Tipton's hands are visible to viewers. He is wearing a lab coat] You sent for me, sir?
- John Beresford Tipton: Mike, you see here two test tubes. Each one contains a separate element, in fluid state, of course. Their nature prevents them from mixing. Now watch.
- [Tipton pours the liquid from one test tube into the other. The liquids do not blend and one sits atop the other liquid]
- Michael Anthony: [Smiling] Mmm-hmm. You might say that, because of their attitudes, they are mutually exclusive - incompatible.
- John Beresford Tipton: [Chuckles] *You* might say.
- [Anthony is taken aback]
- John Beresford Tipton: But at the moment, we are dealing with chemical elements. Now, in this dropper
- [indicating a third tube]
- John Beresford Tipton: is a third element, completely unrelated to the other two. Let's see what happens.
- [Tipton pours the third tube into the tube containing the other two liquids. All three liquids mingle into one liquid]
- John Beresford Tipton: In that dropper is a catalytic agent, which has the property of affecting and blending the other two elements.
- [Tipton puts the tube into a rack]
- John Beresford Tipton: There. Mike, there are people whose lives are just as dramatically changed by a catalytic agent.
- [Tipton hands an envelope to Anthony]
- John Beresford Tipton: Here's the name of our next millionaire, one of the incompatible elements - a human element.
- [Anthony accepts the envelope, smiles, bows]
- [first lines]
- Michael Anthony: [to the viewers] My name is Michal Anthony, and until he passed on, I was executive secretary to John Beresford Tipton, a multibillionaire, who frequently gave away one million dollars, tax-free, to someone who had never met him and was completely unaware of his existence. John Beresford Tipton lived on a 60,000-acre retreat he had named Silverstone, which he had made into a fabulous world all his own. One night I was told that Mr. Tipton wanted to see me in one of his laboratories.
- Michael Anthony: [Reviewing a file, to the viewers] This is the case history that developed after Mr. Tipton gave me this envelope that night in the laboratory. A case history of Amberson Adams.
- Michael Anthony: [Anthony has tried twice previously to meet with Adams, who was always leaving for an appointment and brushing him off. Finally, on the third attempt, Anthony meets Adams in an empty classroom, where he had taught an evening course] Now, Professor Adams?
- Prof. Amberson Adams: [Testy] What is it? Look, I've had a hard day. What do you want? Who are you?
- Michael Anthony: My name is Michael Anthony.
- [Opens his briefcase and withdraws a check]
- Michael Anthony: I've been authorized to give you a check for a million dollars.
- Prof. Amberson Adams: Oh, now, look. Enough's enough! In the last few days, I've been badgered by the foundation, slapped by a girl, flaunted on the front pages, threatened by outraged women, and burned in effigy by jealous men.
- Michael Anthony: [Anthony, with a wry expression, gives the check to Adams] Perhaps this check will ease the pain. It's for one million dollars, tax-free.
- Prof. Amberson Adams: [Examining check] What is this? Some new quiz show? 'Do You Trust Your Professor?'
- Michael Anthony: [Chuckles] No.
- Prof. Amberson Adams: Well, then, what is it?
- Michael Anthony: A gift from an anonymous donor. It's yours,
- [Retrieving a document from his briefcase]
- Michael Anthony: if you will observe a few simple rules. You must tell no one the exact amount or how you got it, except your wife, should you marry. If you do, the balance will be reclaimed. That's all.
- [Offering the agreement]
- Michael Anthony: Just sign here.
- Prof. Amberson Adams: This is unbelievable. It's Unbelievable. Are you sure there isn't some catch to this?
- Michael Anthony: None. The money's yours, in your bank, in your account. You may spend it as you wish.
- Prof. Amberson Adams: [Thinking of how to spend the gift] You know, I might just do that.
- [Adams signs the pledge, which Anthony retains]
