Marvin Miller: Michael Anthony

Quotes

  • Michael Anthony : [Anthony enters Tipton's study. Tipton is seated in a high-backed chair at his desk, perusing a women's magazine]  You, uh, sent for me, sir?

John Beresford Tipton : Mike, you seem a little puzzled at my choice of reading matter this evening.

    [chuckles]

John Beresford Tipton : Women's fashions.

Michael Anthony : I understand that it's a very big business, sir.

John Beresford Tipton : Bigger and more savage than you realize. The dog-eat-dog and jungle infighting. Those stocks and bonds are as cozy as a corner drugstore.

    [reads from the magazine]

John Beresford Tipton : "Maddelana - High Style's Head Priestess." Very silken-looking, isn't she, Mike?

    [Anthony smiles]

John Beresford Tipton : I wouldn't want to tangle in business with her.

[Tipton hands an envelope to Anthony]

John Beresford Tipton : I want you to deliver a million dollars, Mike.

    Michael Anthony : To Maddelana?

John Beresford Tipton : No, Mike - to her ghost.

    [Anthony bows and departs]

  • [first lines]

Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My name is Michael Anthony, and until his death, I was executive secretary to John Beresford Tipton, a multibillionaire, who had one of the most curious hobbies on record. From time to time, he gave away $1,000,000, tax-free, to people he never met, who never knew his name. And this is Silverstone, Mr. Tipton's 60,000-acre estate, where he spent his time pursuing many startling and varied interests. One day, Mr. Tipton called me to his study.

  • Michael Anthony : [to the viewers]  My mission was to deliver a million dollars to a famous fashion designer's ghost. Now Maddelana's ghost was a very real young woman, and the odd part of it is, although I did complete my mission, actually we never met face-to-face. But a young man by the name of Tony Cardell knew her better than she did herself.

  • Sally Delaney : [Anthony knocks on the apartment door of Sally Delaney, who is awakened from a sound sleep, gets out of bed]  Ow. Just a Minute.

[as she goes to answer the door, Anthony knocks again]

Sally Delaney : Just a minute.

[Sally opens the door a bit, but the chain on the lock allows it to open only a few inches]

Sally Delaney : What is it?

Michael Anthony : [Anthony is on the other side of the door, but cannot see in]  Miss Sally Delaney?

    Sally Delaney : Yes.

Michael Anthony : My name is Michael Anthony. I'm sorry to call so late but my plane was delayed and I had to get on another one almost immediately.

    Sally Delaney : So?

Michael Anthony : I think you'll understand when you find out why I've come to see you.

    Sally Delaney : Why?

Michael Anthony : I've come to give you a million dollars.

Sally Delaney : [Still dead tired]  Oh. All right. Just slip it through the door.

Michael Anthony : If you don't believe me, just look at this

[Anthony slips the check past the chain lock]

    Michael Anthony : It's a cashier's check for $1,000,000, tax-free.

Sally Delaney : [Through half-open eyes]  It looks real. Well who is it from?

Michael Anthony : I'm not permitted to tell you the identity of the donor. If you'll just let me in, we can conclude this very quickly.

Sally Delaney : Oh, no. Not a chance.

Michael Anthony : [Getting frustrated]  More than that, Miss Delaney, you have a mind of your own!

Sally Delaney : [Sleepily]  Oh thanks. Thanks for the compliment.

Michael Anthony : You may keep the check, but first, sign this paper

    [Anthony slips the agreement in]

Michael Anthony : where I put the X.

Sally Delaney : [Signing the document through half-open eyes]  Do you mind telling me what I'm signing?

Michael Anthony : It's a pledge never to tell anyone where you got the money or even that you have a million dollars. If you should marry, you will be permitted to tell your husband, but there are no other exceptions. If you should break the pledge, the money remaining in the account will be returned to the donor.

Sally Delaney : But what do I do with the money?

Michael Anthony : Spend it anyway you like, Miss Delaney.

Sally Delaney : [Still half-asleep]  Oh, thanks. Thanks very much.

Michael Anthony : It was a pleasure, Miss Delaney.

    [Anthony turns to leave]

Sally Delaney : Good night, Mr. Anthony.

[Check in hand, Sally closes the door and stumbles back to bed]

    Sally Delaney : . A million dollars.

[after a few seconds, she sits straight up and looks at the check]
