- A hard-working waitress in a diner is stunned to discover that she's become the recipient of one million dollars. At first she asks who she needs to kill before she signs the paper, but she quickly realizes that the money is hers. She immediately begins to happily plot with her diner colleague/friend about trips throughout Europe. Soon we find them both touring the continent. On a tour of a lovely historic Italian home they discover that the home's owner is a young count, who just happens to be single. The count also seems to be having financial difficulties, and is selling off family antiques. At first the count doesn't reveal himself, and Virgina schemes to meet him by purchasing one of the paintings, not realizing she is talking to the attractive count himself. Rapidly recovering from embarrassment, dating ensues. An uncomfortable visit with the count's mother demonstrates the differences in their social stations. Virginia becomes unable to persist in the charade of not being from a wealthy family. She storms away after a tiff with the count who thinks he has been misled about her wealth, she assumes that there's no hope for their relationship. As the friends are about to leave Italy, we find the count has decided that Virginia is worth following to America and leaves with them.
