The compound set used here is the same one used in Star Trek(1966) attacked by the Gorn in Arena (1967). It was originally constructed for Tales of the 77th Bengal Lancers (1956) and left standing at Vasquez Rocks for a number of years.
Near the end of the episode, when Jim Phelps (Peter Graves) is carried aloft by the helicopter, he was originally supposed to be shown stepping onto the rope ladder in a close-up or medium shot, after which he was supposed to be carried a few feet off the ground. At that point, the plan was to use a stunt double for the longer shots of Phelps being carried through the desert. The pilot instead initially lifted Graves about 20 feet into the air. Graves found that he didn't mind, and suggested that they simply shoot the rest of the scenes with him holding onto the ladder. All of the shots of Jim Phelps on the rope ladder, therefore, including those with Phelps high in the air, were shot with Peter Graves himself.
The 1964 Bell 47G-3B-1 helicopter (N3079G) flown by Barney is the same one used as the Batcopter in Batman: The Movie (1966) as well as other TV programs and movies. It has been restored as the Batcopter and makes appearances at airshows.
