MISTER ROBERTS Love at 78 rpm 1965

This is the 9th episode of the 1965-66 television series based on the 1955 film of the same name. The film starred Henry Fonda, James Cagney, Jack Lemmon, William Powell and Ward Bond. The series stars Roger Smith as Mr. Roberts, Francis X Slattery in the Cagney role, George Ives in the Powell bit and Steve Harmon as Ensign Pulver. Jack Lemmon won an Oscar for his role in the film. The series ran for a total of 30 episodes.

The latest mail call has the crew getting packages containing records from home. They are all recordings from wives, family etc. The only record player on the ship gets busted up by Mister Roberts (Roger Smith) accidentally.

At the next port, Ensign Pulver (Steve Harmon) is sent to find a replacement. When Harmon returns to the ship the phonograph is grabbed up by the Captain. The Captain, (Francis X Slattery) is choked at Smith for sending in another request for a transfer.

Harmon has also brought a jug of alcohol on board. The jug is 90 percent booze and 10 percent papaya juice. Anyways, the Captain has a fondness for papaya juice. Soon, Slattery and Smith are 3 sheets to the wind. While this is going on, the record player is being used by the men to listen to the records from home.

Once Slattery sobers up, he is less than amused with the men. He intends to have several of them charged. That is till he is reminded about being drunk while on duty. The annoyed Captain decides to sweep the whole matter under the rug and forget about the incident.

A couple of chuckles are to be had in this one.
