S.I. Hayakawa (1906-92), whom Pete jokingly suggests Linc impersonate, was from 1968-73 the controversial president of San Francisco State College. Pete is referencing the 1968-69 student strike in which revolutionary groups led by the Black Panthers, the Third World Liberation Front and Students for a Democratic Society threatened to shut down the school unless their fifteen non-negotiable demands were met, among which was the establishment of a Black Studies program and an immediate and unconditional end to the Vietnam War. Hayakawa resisted, once even pulling the wires from a protester's loudspeaker, but eventually compromised and in December 1968 he created the nation's first College of Ethnic Studies. In 1976 Hayakawa won election and served as a Republican Senator for California 1977-83. (Source: Wikipedia)
