At the circus with Monk
TheLittleSongbird17 July 2017
'Monk' has always been one of my most watched shows when needing comfort, to relax after a hard day, a good laugh or a way to spend a lazy weekend.

"Mr Monk Goes to the Circus" is not as good as the previous three episodes of Season 2 but is still a fun and intriguing episode, though perhaps one of the season's weaker episodes. Although they still have some amusing moments and both are incredibly well acted, the hostility between Monk and Sharona is out of character, neither have been this cruel and uncaring towards each other and Monk's OCD seems to have been neglected. Especially Sharona, who, like with the cigarette, shows some unprofessionalism.

As clever as it was, the final solution and how the crimes were committed were rather easy to guess early on, also figured out the business with the broken foot and thought that would have been more obvious earlier. The acting from the supporting cast is not too great, Lolita Davidovich oddly enough comes off best. She does her best with some inspired lines, apart from a very inconsistent accent that never sounds authentically Russian. Lola Glaudini lacks warmth and Mark Avenir is just as cold.

However, as much as it sounds like a negative review, there is a lot to enjoy about "Mr Monk Goes to the Circus". As said many times, one of the best things about 'Monk' has always been the acting of Tony Shalhoub in the title role. It was essential for him to work and be the glue of the show, and Shalhoub not only is that but also at his very best he IS the show. Have always loved the balance of the humour, which is often hilarious, and pathos, which is sincere and touching.

Bitty Schram is sharp and no-nonsense and brings a sympathetic edge when the material allows it and doesn't make Sharona out of character. Still love her and Shalhoub's Monk together, and there are plenty of amusing exchanges that serve as a good reminder as to why they are one of the best developed detective duos on television. Benjy is still cute.

Ted Levine is vastly entertaining and will always love Stottlemeyer seesaw (from loyalty and appreciation to frustration) chemistry with Monk. Jason Gray-Stanford is nice support too.

It's not just the cast though. Another star is the writing, which is also essential to whether the show would be successful or not and succeed it does here. The mix of hilarious wry humour, lovable quirkiness and tender easy-to-relate-to drama is delicately done but extremely deft. The mystery is an interesting one with a colourful circus setting and the elephant murder one of the show's cleverest and most gruesome.

Visually, the episode is shot in a slick and stylish way, and the music is both understated and quirky. While there is a preference for the theme music for Season 1, Randy Newman's "It's a Jungle Out There" has grown on me overtime, found it annoying at first but appreciate its meaning and what it's trying to say much more now.

In summary, good if not great. 7/10 Bethany Cox

A complicated way to kill someone...

Warning: Spoilers
A hooded ninja-type figure shoots a circus guy at a café then wheels away. Stottlemeye brings in Monk who hates circuses, especially the clowns. Turns out that Sharona has a problem with elephants. Problem is that Monk's main suspect has a broken leg. It just gets silly from there on in. The episode is saved when Monk's hostility to Sharona's elephant phobia result in her going on strike (no wipes provided). Lots of amusing moments ensue. The final scene is amusing, although I wish they's explore the selfish side of Monk's personality more often, because he comes across as caring and sympathetic in other episodes when he solves cases, rather than smug when he catches the bad guy which is what I think the writers are aiming for (his 'release' when he puts everything in order as part of his OCD).

Watermelon Head

Every phobia on the face of the Earth will be found at a circus. When a man is killed, Monk and Sharon end up there. Sharona has developed a fear of elephants from a childhood incident. What transpires is rooting through lies and duplicity by a woman they encounter. The best part of the episode involves Monk's saying to Sharona to "suck it up." My favorite was a clown who stands behind people and mocks them.

The only reason to watch this episode is to see the lovely lolita davidovitch ...she had the moron on the ropes and let him get away ...sigh ... perhaps another day since this is only season 2, episode 4 .... unfortunately, it never gets better than this episode

The Elephant Man

Monk is at his annoying best (or worst?) to his loyal assistant Sharona in this season 2 episode, as they investigate a murderer who may be working at the circus. One thing I don't like about season 2 is Randy Newman's theme song. I prefer Jeff Beal's theme song in season 1. Seriously, Mr Newman's theme is so Randy Newmanish that it sounds like a MAD TV parody. Still, this is an episode worth watching, especially with Monk seeking to display empathy to Sharona.

Suck It up!
claudio_carvalho24 April 2024
An arrogant man is having dinner with his date when a masked acrobat arrives at the restaurant and kills him with one shot in the heart. Stottlemeyer, Randall, Monk and Sharona are investigating the crime scene and soon they learn that the victim is Sergei Cluvarias, the unpopular ringmaster of the Dratch & Denby Traveling Circus. Stottlemeyer suspects of the animal trainer Nikolai Petroff, since he has the weapon of the same caliber that killed Sergei, is an acrobat apprentice and was the lover of Sergei's date Ariana Dakkar. However, Monk believes that Sergei's ex-wife Natasha Lovara, who is a skilled trapeze acrobat and shooter, is the killer. But the problem is that Natasha has a broken feet confirmed by X-rays. Meanwhile, Sharona has a trauma with elephants and Monk tells her that her fear is irrational, and she should "suck it up!". Sharona feels offended by Monk and is estranged to him. When the elephant's trainer Edgar Heinz is murdered by his elephant, Monk analyzes the odds and concludes Natasha has killed him. But how to prove both murderers?

"Mr. Monk Goes to the Circus" is another funny episode of Monk. His phobia with the police officer that is his fan but is not wearing a pair of identical socks is silly, but the clown in the circus when Monk is solving the case is funny. The reaction of Sharona when Monk says "suck it up" to her is fair, since her boss has many phobias, and this comment was not appropriate. My question is how a skilled radiologist can not identify old fractures from new ones. But the murders are well-resolved in the end. My vote is seven.

Not my favourite episode
shamblerbatman10 November 2023
This is a hard episode to watch because I find it hard to believe that Monk would be SO cold to Sharona when she shares her story about the elephant. We've seen that he has a good heart throughout the series and it just doesn't track with his character... Because his actions are awkward and honestly rude a lot of the time, it's his kind heart that makes it forgivable. If he's a jerk then it's harder to cheer for him in my opinion.

Last gripe is just that the accents of the circus folk are weird. Maybe just get them to use their normal accents if they're not good at the ones you're aiming for...

Terrible accents !
NatashaJAmos20155 December 2019
I would have enjoyed the episode a lot more if the actors did a better job with their accents. They were so terrible.

Monk was kind of mean to Sharona in this episode.
