Broadcast no. 51 (Jan 29 1968), "The Monkees' Paw" must be ranked a disappointment that held much promise, based on the 1902 W. W. Jacobs story about a monkey's paw that grants its owner three wishes, at a terrible price (THE ALFRED HITCHCOCK HOUR had filmed an eerie adaptation three years earlier). Hans Conreid plays Mendrek the Magician, whose run of bad luck comes to a screeching halt once he sells the monkey's paw to Micky, becoming a millionaire overnight while the band's dreams don't turn out well at all, leaving poor Micky without a voice (unless a crayon is nearby!). In a nod to the forthcoming "Mijacogeo," we get a mention of Frodis as the group try to recoup the Dolenz tonsils. Severn Darden, from the first season's "Monkee vs. Machine," makes an unbilled appearance as a psychiatrist who ends up replacing the silent Micky on the couch himself. The lone song featured is the second and last appearance of the band recording of Boyce and Hart's "Words," following a short rendition of "Goin' Down" minus vocals. 53rd in production, filmed Nov 13-15, next up- "Christmas Show" (shot just before Thanksgiving).
