- The Monkees have been enjoying playing a gig at Pop's Italian Restaurant But one day while they are eating a sandwich that redefines "footlong" a gangster named Fuselli comes in and announces that he is taking over the place. Pops is thrown out, and when Davy stands up to Fuselli, his henchman Rocco punches Davy.
The boys decide to get the restaurant back by reapplying for their initial jobs there. They are hired but with a warning not to go to the police. To prove his toughness, Fuselli has Rocco slap Peter; Micky thus stands up to demonstrate the boys' own toughness - by slapping Peter. Amid the strains of "I'm Not Your Steppin' Stone" the boys work the kitchen and serve as waiters, but as Micky puts it in a voiceover, "Hey fellas, this is not gonna work out, we better get some help."
After meeting with a police Inspector who can out-Friday his LAPD colleague Joe Friday, the boys try to get evidence against Fuselli, but their efforts fail - dusting a wine glass with powder fails because Fuselli wears a glove; Micky taps Fuselli's phone and records a call setting up a Syndicate meeting, but all he gets is playback of himself calling over the others; an attempt to open Fuselli's safe blows up.
Fuselli has a dinner and invites all of his friends in crime - bank robber "Red" O'Leary (with the usual Irish accent); extortionist Big Flora; narcotics and diamond smuggler Paddy The Fix; numbers runner Benny The Book (who sports a serious stutter) . The plan is to discuss how to divide up the city for their own gain. The guys work as waiters during the dinner but as the criminals have never seen each other, they enter the meeting as The Purple Flower Gang (they explain wearing white carnations because it's tough to get purple flowers) and manage to infiltrate Peter out to call the police. They disrupt the meeting by dividing up the city like a Tic-Tac-Toe board and spread rumors among the guests that each are trying to trick the others out of their territory. The tension between Fuselli and his guests escalates and finally swells into a gunfight (interrupted briefly because the director wants a shapely young woman to make a cameo appearence with Micky). Micky vainly tries to stop the battle, but the varied criminals are all shot down. The boys thus return ownership of the restaurant to Pop but when the Inspector and police arrive with Peter, they see the criminals laying on the floor and the Inspector arrests The Purple Flower Gang - to the surprise of the boys.
