Broadcast no. 56 (Mar 4 1968), "Some Like It Lukewarm" is a play off "Some Like It Hot," as Davy gets elected to dress up as a girl so the band can perform in a competition that only allows mixed groups. Famed Philadelphia radio DJ Jerry Blavat plays himself, 'The Geator with the Heater,' flirting outrageously with 'Miss Jones,' which must rank as Davy's funniest performance (which is saying a lot). Yet the most noteworthy appearance is that of lovely Deana Martin, Dean's 19 year old daughter, in one of her rare acting roles, playing a member of the all girl group The Westminster Abbies, whose rendition of "Last Train to Clarksville" must be seen to be believed. Since she too has to dress up (in beard and moustache), the two naturally find one another irresistible, both with stars in their eyes (an old gimmick from Davy's earliest episodes). Look fast for veteran bad guy Bill McKinney as a flirtatious janitor, this being his very first TV role. The final segment is an unexpected treat, a visit with Charlie Smalls, Davy's buddy going back to his Broadway days in New York, who demonstrates the difference between white soul (Ringo and The Beatles) and black soul (Motown). Charlie Smalls later earned a Tony Award for his original score for the 1975 Broadway success "The Wiz," the black version of "The Wizard of Oz," its most recognized song being "Ease on Down the Road" (sadly, he died in 1987 at age 43, from complications resulting from a burst appendix). "The Door into Summer," composed by Chip Douglas and Bill Martin, makes its second and final appearance (Davy desperately trying to escape), while the four Monkees are joined by the four Abbies for the second and final appearance of Jeff Barry's "She Hangs Out," most appropriate, the girls dancing quite a groove while Davy vainly tries to keep a straight face. 57th in production, filmed Dec 11-13 1967, next up, the very last episode to be shot- "Monkees Race Again."
