Grandpa Never Looked So Good!
ccthemovieman-120 December 2007
Grandpa turning himself into a beautiful blonde and posing as Herman's girlfriend? Yup, that's what happens in this crazy episode which all begins when Lily is bored at home and gets a job as a fashion model.

In less than decade, a theme in here - a husband being totally against his wife getting a job - would be passé, but Herman not only is against it but insecure enough to feel Lily's new profession would lend itself to guys hitting on her. (See the quotes here on the title page under "fun stuff" regarding the hanky-panky line!)

"As that great philosopher, Steve Allen, said: 'Jealousy is the stinkweed in the Garden Of Life'" -- Herman Munster.

Grandpa's plan is to get Lily jealous of Herman, so he gives him a choice of "playboy pills." Get a load of these names: Ricardo Cortez, Mickey Rooney, Pat Boone, Mel Torme, Dean Martin, Caesar Romero and Frank Sinatra. Herman takes the Sinatra pill. ("You know," he says, "I've always felt simpatico with Frankie.")

POOF - Herman turns into "ol Blue Eyes," but Grandpa thinks Herman is too old to be Sinatra, so he pulls out another special pill from inside his vest: the Richard Burton pill and Herman downs it, has a new look and is quoting Shakespeare while holding onto a rose. Hey, if it could attract Elizabeth Taylor, it should work on Lily Munster! However, Herman changes his mind and Grandpa and he finally settle on the right pill - a Texas playboy.

Anyway, all kinds of these corny and funny impersonations and scenes are used and there are a lot of one-liners at the fashion show where the "playboy," the "girlfriend" (grandpa never looked better!), Lily and the fashion designer all clash with hilarious results.

Meanwhile, Roger Carmel as the Eastern European designer "Laszlo Brastoff" is a real hoot, as is Lois Roberts as "Irving." Nina Shipman is the looker who is Grandpa underneath.

This is a comical episode that explores fame, jealousy, insecurity, pathos, trust, love, and resistance to change.(To name a few things) Funny and thought-provoking,the message is timeless. This show is perfect at 30 minutes,a lot happens and it moves fast. No,it isn't Masterpiece Theater, but it is fun, imaginative, and worthwhile. Check it out and see what YOU think !🌞
