- Jessica visits her editor Sally on the estate of her widowed dad, tycoon Buck Wilson. Son B.J. Wilson tells George Foster, Buck's brother-in-law and firm lieutenant, he's on the track of a $150,000,000 embezzlement. After a mystery affair, Buck goes missing. Sergeant Tom Jarrow, a cop who had befriended the tycoon's children in their youth, investigates. Theatrical medium Marika Valenti claims to see Buck's corpse in a séance, but her own corpse is found in a nearby cistern. Ex-con and live-in driver Carl Graham is arrested. - While working in New York city with her book editor Sally Wilson, Jessica learns that Sally's father, Buck Wilson, might be purchasing the firm that publishes Jessica's novels. She meets Buck at a restaurant he's just purchased but after returning home later that evening, he is nowhere to be found. Not everyone believes that anything has happened to him but when Jessica finds his body in the back seat of one of his classic cars, the police are convinced that his chauffeur Carl is responsible. Buck's son B.J. learns that $150 million of company funds have gone missing and a con artist by the name of Marika - pretending to be a psychic - is also found dead.
