"Neither Rain, nor Snow, nor Sleet, nor Hail Fail to Bail the Pail of Wail from Jail"
WeatherViolet19 February 2010
Brandon Douglas first appears on "MSW" in a juvenile role, as Todd, one of three pupils of Wenton Academy, in "Night of the Headless Horseman" (#3.11). Nine seasons afterward, in "Track of a Soldier" (#12.18) Brandon reaches young adult status, as he plays Pete Levering, the step-son of the owner of Starcrest Lodge, and the caregiver of Soldier, his faithful Black Labrador/German Shepherd type canine, who leads Pete to the body and then must help to rescue him from false arrest.

Ellen Levering (Linda Kelsey) operates Starcrest Lodge, located near the base of the Grand Teton Mountains, in western Wyoming. A widowed Howard Levering (Wings Hauser) has married Ellen, giving her a step-son, Pete Levering (Brandon Douglas), with whom she attempts to nurture family bonds.

Soldier (Himself) keeps Pete in trouble with Teton County Sheriff Jed Bullock (Ben Lemon), as ranchers and farmers falsely accuse Soldier of destroying their livestock. When Sheriff Jed Bullock gives Pete an ultimatum to destroy Soldier, Colonel Howard Levering sides against his son and beloved pet. So, Pete must scrutinize Soldier's every move to protect his innocence.

Luisa (Vaitiare Bandera), Aldo (Tony Devon) and Juan (James Victor) serve on the staff at Starcrest Lodge, Luisa as an efficient maid, Aldo as a driver, and Juan as a loyal assistant, who had served as a military Sergeant in the battalion of Colonel Howard Levering, who now plans to run for a seat in the Wyoming Senate, representing Teton County.

Ellen receives guests, who begin to arrive for a week's vacation at Starcrest Lodge, including financier Arthur Wainwright (Stephen Macht) and his mistress, Marla Hastings (Katherine Olsen), and her ex-partner, Lloyd Nichols (Fredric Lehne), and his ex-partner, Greta Bayer (Audrey Landers), who befriends Arthur's assistant, Harley Foote (Michael Zelniker), when Harley's doctor diagnoses a mysterious rare disease, which could number his days.

Finally, Ellen receives her dear old friend Jessica Fletcher (Angela Lansbury), who suffers from writer's burn-out and needs to bask in the Grand Tetons to rejuvenate her stamina.

Greta Bayer encourages Harley Foote to live his final days to the fullest, by accompanying her on a shopping trip into Jackson, instead of doing Arthur's bidding, while Arthur enjoys his time with Marla. Greta should know because she's been widowed from a wealthy husband, who left her a $two million non-set diamond, which she carries around in a tiny pouch.

Greta had invited Lloyd Nichols to share her NYC apartment and her life in the aftermath, and now he returns in pursuit of Greta's diamond, which his other ex, Marla Hastings, also trails, and which Luisa discovers frozen into an ice cube tray in the freezer of Greta's refrigerator while she refreshes the room, as Lloyd discovers while hiding in the corner, after breaking in while Greta and Harley are busy shopping.

Lloyd also shares a past with Colonel Howard Levering, as he threatens to derail Howard's state Senate campaign, by revealing the facts about an incident which claimed the life of Lloyd's brother Timothy Nichols during maneuvers on Wasatch River, under the command of Colonel Levering.

Jessica does what she can to champion young love when Ellen discovers Howard's secret, when Arthur receives a call from his wife, and when Greta discovers that Harley's condition may not prove life-threatening after all, when he flies off to Cheyenne to consult another physician.

But one night, when Soldier sneaks off into the forest, Jessica hears his howling, as Pete sneaks off to trail Soldier, who discovers a body with Howard's bloody Army knife beside, which Pete retrieves and returns to its showcase, without wiping it clean, and subsequently gets arrested when Sheriff Jed Bullock pieces together the evidence.

Soldier assists Jessica in an investigation of their own, to prove Pete's innocence, as the loose diamond is also missing. But Soldier manages to retrieve other bits of evidence from the forest, to deliver to Jessica, to figure whodunit, along the "Track of a Soldier."

This episode represents the second of two "MSW" guest roles each for Audrey Landers, Brandon Douglas and Fredric Lehne, the third of three for Linda Kelsey and Michael Zelniker, the fourth of four for Wings Hauser, and the fifth of five "MSW's" for Stephen Macht.

Killed by an angry ex-, a colonel who he's harassing, a diamond thief...or someone else?
planktonrules14 December 2023
This episode is supposedly taking place in the Tetons, a gorgeous mountain range in Northwest Wyoming (near Yellowstone). Of course, like most other episodes, it was filmed in Hollywood.

When Jessica arrives at a resort in the Tetons, she soon notices that a man named Nichols, as he's apparently hated by several people there. One is his ex-, who he used to beat up before she got the courage to leave him. Another is an ex-colonel who is going to be running for office...and Nichols keeps telling everyone that the colonel is a killer. And, finally, when a diamond is stolen at about the same time as Nichols is found dead, it could be his confederate in the theft did it. Or, there could be a fourth person, as Nichols seems to attract folks who dislike him!

This is a pretty good episode and the murderer might catch you by surprise. Well worth seeing...even if it's not the Tetons.

Jessica's Tetonic murder mystery
safenoe11 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
Here Jessica finds herself in the Grand Tetons, and she helps solve the murder of a blackmailer of a military hero played by Wings Hauser. Wings' character is running for the State Senate but a tragedy from the past threatens to scuttle his election campaign.

This episode featured the beautiful Audrey Landers, who plays Greta, who falls in love with Harley Foote (played by Michael Zelniker). I sort of had a chill up my spine when in the storyline Harley receives a call from his doctor Dr Mingel, and I thought Mingel sounds like Mengele, as in Dr Joseph Mengele from the Nazi Regime...Teutonic. Maybe it's connecting the dots a bit too much.

Also in one scene there were four extras playing lodge guests standing in the background not really doing anything. Better direction would have been helpful.

Hooray for Soldier
TheLittleSongbird2 January 2018
Have always been quite fond of 'Murder She Wrote'. It is a fun and relaxing watch that makes you think as you try to unwind in the evening. If one wants more complex, twisty mysteries with lots of tension and suspense 'Murder She Wrote' may not be for you, but if you want something light-hearted and entertaining but still provide good mysteries 'Murder She Wrote' fits the bill just fine.

"Track of a Soldier" is something of a much needed remedy after the leaving-a-bad-taste-in-the-mouth "Something Foul in Flappieville". While not a 'Murder She Wrote' classic or among its best episodes, "Track of a Soldier" is for me among the better episodes of the twelfth and final season.

Its weak link, other than that it takes a little too long to get going perhaps, is the denouement. Not a complete failure, and it's not obvious, but much more attention is given to the solution to the jewel theft crime which was well done and clever admittedly.

Far less satisfying is that for the murder (a big problem seeing that it's the more important and serious crime). The explanation for it felt incredibly rushed and last minute, with the evidence being easily missed, a fairly trivial motive compared to how it initially seemed and the perpetrator being one that one doesn't get to know properly.

On the other hand, Angela Lansbury can do no wrong and she is well supported by the supporting cast that includes Wings Hauser doing notably great work and Michael Zelniker giving by far his best performance of his three 'Murder She Wrote' appearances. Stealing the show is the adorable and very well trained Soldier the dog.

Excepting that it takes time to get going and the less-than-satisfying denouement, the mystery is a compelling and well-crafted one that never felt simplistic or convoluted.

Production values are slick and stylish. The music has energy and has presence but also not making the mistake of over-scoring, while it is hard to forget or resist the theme tune. The writing is fun and thought-provoking, not taking itself seriously.

In conclusion, very well done. 8/10 Bethany Cox

Track of a soldier
coltras3511 August 2023
Jessica is on vacation in the Teton Mountains to meet her friend Greta, at the hotel of Colonel Howard Levering (Ret.) Greta's abusive ex-boyfriend Frank Nichols is in the area with his girlfriend Marla, scheming to steal a diamond Greta inherited. Nichols also has a beef with Colonel Levering, who was the commander of Nichols and his brother while they were in the army, and threatens to raise an old scandal, to the alarm of Levering, his wife Ellen, son Pete and assistant Juan. Greta is also being romanced by Harley Foote, the secretary of Myra's Meal Ticket Arthur Jennings, with Harley re-evaluating his life after a fateful call from his doctor. And Pete's dog Soldier is in trouble after being seen around a farm where livestock has been killed. Then, the diamond disappears and Nichols turns up dead.

A hot babe escaping her violent ex, a man dying of a disease, diamond stolen, a war hero with a past, and a victim stabbed - all these feature in a diverting episode. Formula works, and Jessica catches the murderer at the end, after the wrong person gets arrested.
