John Monroe (William Windom) is irked that his magazine editor Hamilton Greeley (Harold J. Stone) is dedicating a whole issue to a children's author. The author, George Lindsey Lockhart (the great Paul Ford, Col. Hall of "The Phil Silvers Show" a.k.a. "Sergeant Bilko") comes to stay at the Monroe's house to work with John who will be illustrating his book being published by the magazine. George puts off work by recalling solemn soliloquies and anecdotes backed by bourbon. For two weeks the pair carouses aimlessly in the upstairs office. John's daughter Lydia (Lisa Gerritsen) talks with the degrading-tongued George who confesses he doesn't enjoy writing children's books and is afraid of the habit-forming strive for success. While talking with her, he discovers a solution and turns out "The Shrike and the Chipmunk" and begins "The Stork Who Hated Babies".
This is a fun episode with Paul Ford working well with the cast. "The Shrike and the Chipmunk" is an amusing James Thurber fable and was presented in this episode with Thurber-like animation.
