It's 1962, and Oliver says he wants to stay up late to watch "the new guy", meaning The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962), which Carson joined in 1962. During one scene when Oliver is watching the show, the announcer is heard saying, "From Hollywood, it's The Tonight Show . . ." For its first ten years, the show originated from New York City. During that time a few of the broadcasts originated on the West Coast; however, the black-and-white TV screen Oliver is watching shows the opening credits with the New York skyline in the background. The show moved to Hollywood (or, rather, Burbank, California) a decade later, in 1972.
