Not On Your Todd!
ShadeGrenade21 November 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Appalled by the worsening standard of the food in the canteen, Blakey suggests Mrs.Butler apply for the job as cook. The new area manager, Mr.Simpson, is an old friend of hers, and Mum gets the job without any difficulty whatever. Soon talk is rife in the depot of impending marriage. With an ally at the top, Jack thinks he has Blakey over a barrel, and starts pushing him about...

Written by George Layton and Jonathan Lynn. Bob Todd of 'The Benny Hill Show' guest stars as 'Mr.Simpson'.

Funniest moment - Blakey telling 'Jack' to get out of his chair. The figure in the chair lowers his paper, and Blakey is horrified to see he has been talking to Mr.Simpson all along.

Jack cooks up trouble!
Rabical-913 January 2017
Warning: Spoilers
The resignation of Mrs. Webb, the canteen cook, following an argument over her lack of culinary skills, has left Blakey needing to look for a replacement. Jack suggests that Mrs. Butler should take the job. She is given an interview by the new depot manager Mr. Simpson who turns out to be an old friend of hers and is duly given the job. Knowing that Blakey and Simpson do not get on, Jack uses this knowledge to his advantage to order Blakey around...

'Friends In High Places', written by George Layton & Jonathan Lynn, is probably the best of the post Reg Varney episodes, helped by the excellent performance from the stone faced Bob Todd, who graced 'The Benny Hill Show' for many years. Mrs. Webb was played by Claire Davenport, who specialised in playing no-nonsense women. She had appeared two years earlier as one of the female drivers in the first of the three 'On The Buses' movies.

Funniest bit - Jack's horror at discovering that Mr. Simpson is due to retire, meaning that all his perks have gone!

A fine later episode.

The staff are served a curry, food that's even so bad that even Olive can't eat it, an outburst sees Mrs Webb walk out, the hunt for a new cook begins.

I had all but written this final series off, and some of it hasn't been up to standard, but there have been a few good episodes, and arguably a very good one here, Friends in High places harks back to the show's earlier years.

A funny scenario, with some really good one liners and gags, I enjoyed seeing Mrs Webb lose her cool with Jack, and enjoyed seeing Blakey make a fool of himself unaware of Mum's company, Stephen Lewis put a lot into this one.

Bob Todd is excellent as area manager Mr Simpson, what a shame he didn't appear in more, a better character than Michael Sheard's. Todd was of course well known for The Benny Hill show, you'll watch this one wondering where you know the face from.

8/10.
