Mr. Foskett, a holiday acquaintance of the Meldrews from some years ago, visits accompanied by two teenage boys whom Victor realise are not his sons only after they have all eaten a meal. Foskett was previously suicidal following his first wife's death but has now remarried. Unfortunately he learns that his wife has left him and locks himself in the bathroom; later, wearing only a towel, he tries to jump off the roof. He's taken to the police station, where he kills himself. The return of the Meldrews' stolen car is no comfort.
