Is There Anything In That Flat That's Legally Yours?
Lunerar11 June 2020
When you think about American sitcoms adverts usually mean that episodes run for 22 or 23 minutes which often makes for snappy, tight episodes. OFAH perhaps suffered a little in the early days of having to fill a full half-hour slot. I can imagine many of the early episodes being much better if just a few minutes were trimmed. Not entire scenes, just a few jokes removed here and there.

It's interesting that we still, at this point in the series, haven't seen anything of the flat apart from the main sitting-room.

This is a better episode than any of the first season, I would say. The second half is a good example of the show raising its standards from the previous season.

We also get to see the love between the family where Rodney is about to take the hit for Del. Even though Del is often so horrible to him there is a strong brotherly bond and it is this sense of strong family connections and friendships that made this such a loved show.

Strong start to the second season

Rodney dates a police woman much to the horror of Del and Granddad.

This is an excellent episode that builds on the prior set-up of Rodney's penchant for uniforms. Not only does he defy Del and Granddad's wishes by taking Sandra to the pictures but he brings her back to Nelson Mandela to meet the family.

The above situation as a concept is funny, but the jokes that arise and the events that unfold are done brilliantly. Del, Rodney and Granddad are hilarious as they fumble about the flat trying to hide its contents from one of the 'old bill'. Kate Saunders as Sandra works well as a comedy straight man and her personality (and voice) is almost a foreshadowing of Rodney's eventual true love Cassandra.

Great episode from the Granddad era.

The Long Legs of the Law

The first series of the show was ok, there's one or two very strong episodes, but there was certainly a need back in 1982 for it to improve as the BBC axe was looming.

Thankfully episodes like this spared it.

This is wonderful stuff, with lots of lovely interplay between Del and Rodney, with the actors now much more comfortable in their roles.

It is let down by a rather abrupt ending though.

Warning: Spoilers
"Long Legs of Law" opened season two in the most brilliant way possible. "Long Legs of Law" is a hilarious, well-written, well-acted episode i enjoyed thoroughly. The story is simple and there lies it's beauty: Rodney dates a policewoman !!!!

How Johnny Sullivan does it i don't know. Dialogues are brilliant, situation's are wonderful and the way he handles characters are amazing. The show finally stands on it's two feet and the way it's gonna develop is obvious for the first time. "Long Legs of Law" stands tall as a monument to a brilliant show. This episode was the first episode i re-watched after i heard the sad news that John Sullivan died. I think it should be dedicated to his memory.

The quality of OFAH really takes off.

This was a leap on in quality from the first series already. Although it produces some great comedy in its genius plotline of Rodney dating Sandra the Policewoman (such as Del and Grandad's dark reactions to the news) it's mainly about Rodney growing up. He thinks he can handle the situation, then bungles it with classic naivety, and finally learns his lesson when Sandra coldly gives him the brush-off at the end. Again it's economically done (Sandra is barely in two scenes), finely acted comedy, and one senses that finally, definitively, Only Fools and Horses had arrived and was on its way.
