Do the Sterlings ever get back to earth?
bkoganbing11 November 2017
Sadly Otherworld came to an end with this 8th episode as it was never given a chance to find its audience. Judging from what I see on YouTube it's become quite a cult classic.

This episode has the Sterlings purchasing an old hot air balloon and they journey to another province in which Jonna Lee is hailed as returning princess. There's been an oppressive regime ruling in her absence headed by a Prime Manager Carolyn Seymour. While she has the power Jonna is going to see some changes made.

Not that Seymour is giving up that easily. It all leads to an interesting climax.

Jonna also finds some first love with one of her guard captains Hunt Block. They have some very tender scenes.

As the series was canceled abruptly we never do find out whether the Sterlings return. I'm so glad that this series has become such a focal point of interest with a legion of fans it seems to have.

Gina's Reign

Warning: Spoilers
Warning do not read unless seen episode.

This is another one of the best (only best) of the show and sadly this is the final episode of the show. I know this shouldn't of been the end, this show could of gone on longer may 'be four seasons where we would see the family explore more provinces, as well as some plot development as we see the family not just reach Emar but discover other lost civilizations and technology in connect with ours, I don't know, sadly the only way this show will continue on is in the realm of fan fiction.

The only bad thing about this episode is there is a character I won't say who that dies which I thought was just unnecessary. It's the cliché tragedy near the end that just needs to die, I know that Gina couldn't say on the province but what she couldn't have just simply said goodbye to the character is it really that hard to do.

Anyway, lets get down to business, it's kind of the typical taking the reins storyline but a good one, this episode is pretty much Gina's episode as she is chosen to oversee the province. Really like that test scene, which is somewhat suspenseful, where Gina must answer three questions truthfully and well to prove her worthiness, if she gets one wrong it's game over permanently. It's true that the outcome is predictable we know Gina will get though but we don't know how.

And of course, we see Gina is learning the ropes of her new role as ruler of the province. There is some solid interaction with her force captain, which I thought was sweet this wasn't the generic bf or gf of the weak both actually have meaningful dialog together you almost feel that Gina could stay on this province because there is someone for her, where in the past provinces and even in her own world there isn't.

The province seems like a pretty nice place until like most of these provinces there is a very big nasty worm in this apple. From democracy no longer practiced but worst of all the province flourishes at a dire cost which is slavery.

What's disturbing is the fact that we see children whom aren't in a certain class all are in certain machines which brainwash them into being slaves. Seeing things like that really causes Gina to step up and take charge, despite a teenager Gina really does have the right idea, which really shows that just because a person is young doesn't mean their stupid and just because your older doesn't necessarily mean your wiser.

The fact Gina is a young ruler is fitting because most of the young and young at heart are known at times to be the causes of great change, let alone are people born into the new generation whom may one day take charge of the land from the rulers of before.

There is a cool scene in this from Gina going into some holographic archival room and she then plays a record on the last Princess Metra before her. We discover that the past version doesn't belong to this province but was from Gina's world a long time ago.

This I thought was interesting seeing the family weren't the only travelers and made me wonder if this was a partial set up for the next season would we discover any more travelers from their realm and how long it's gone on.

Though even before this we discover another think how in each dimension the cross too time moves differently as they see a coin of John F Kennedy two hundred years old in the province; it makes sense it's much like with time zones in any state or country, but also it's said that portals are a fold in space and time. Which of course makes the family's goal a little more complicated as the home they once knew could already be gone years' time, this also seemed like part of a set up for the next season seeing the family doing a bit of time traveling, like may 'be the next world would be like the 1970s or the old west.

Anyway, though that record, the past Princess Metra she presents Gina the location of Emar which is a lost civilization that may provide a clue to getting home. And it goes into this cool and trippy visual and music sequence that looks like something out of a music video which is cool as MTV was one of the big things at the time.

This causes Gina to make her do the right thing. And that's pretty much the theme in the episode in always doing what's right for your people and yourself, which is always the mark of a good leader.

Loved the episode but it begs the question...

Warning: Spoilers
Just finished watching the entire 8 episode series. The entire premise of the series is to return home. In the attempt, the family moves from one province to another - encountering adventures along the way.

This episode had me asking the question... can the family do better in life than to have Gina as princess - loved by the very people she's representing. By the episode's end, the entire Sterling family was treated like royalty. It seemed like a great life. I can't imagine that life on earth could even begin to compare.

Staying in this province would have worked against the premise but it would have served as a great way to end the series.
