Why Does This Industry Exist?
Hitchcoc25 July 2014
The premise is interesting. A man who is suffering from what appears to be amnesia finds himself in a homeless shelter. He carries a case containing several vials. It turns out that these vials contain his memories. There are government agents after him. He enlists the help of the pretty director of the shelter who carries around some secrets of her own (though more personal than scientific). As the guy injects the fluids in these cartridges into his body, he experiences huge jolts of energy, past experiences, and pain. He finds out what his name is an his past history. The episode explores that past history and I don't want to give anything away, other than there are ironies at work here and the past is full of pitfalls. I found the episode quite contrived in its plotting and I was a bit disappointed in its ending. Still, it keeps our attention.

Ruined by pointless ending

Warning: Spoilers
The biggest difference between the old series and the new is that in the old series had likable characters behave sensibly and the endings make sense. In the new Outer Limits unlikable characters behave like morons and the unhappy twist ending comes out of nowhere. This episode is wrong on so many levels. 1. Just from a story standpoint. So, we get to like the guy who's lost his memory. We're rooting for him as he realizes his mistakes in life and becomes a good guy. Then, bam, here comes that twist. He becomes a bad guy at the end, such a bad guy that he performs a highly illegal and unethical procedure on the woman who's been helping him the entire episode. I cry complete B.S. 2. So, this evil corporation is operating on homeless people out of a very prominent evil lab in the bad part of town and nobody notices all these homeless people with no memories wandering around? Nobody? No cops. Even if people don't give a crap about the homeless people, surely the city infrastructure would be busting at the seams with all the suddenly mentally ill homeless people who can't fend for themselves. 3. How exactly does this last batch of memories make him into a bad guy? He has new memories. He's just spent hours realizing his mistakes in life and wants to make amends. Why in the hell would all that be undone by earlier memories? Not buying it. The old series would have ended with the scientist guy growing as a person and walking off into the sunset with the girl who's been helping him. It sure wouldn't have insulted the viewer by undoing the entire premise of the episode. Just complete garbage. Don't waste your time.
