The title is based on the international distress code "S.O.S." or "Save our Ship" that is sent out by Morse code, but has been replaced by regular audio-transmissions. Most radio dispatchers no longer use Morse code to communicate.

Initially, it had no abbreviation attached to it, but of the 5 equivalent sequences (IWB, VZE, 3B, V7 and SOS), SOS was the easiest to remember. As it was used in maritime emergencies predominantly, the reverse abbreviative phrase "save our ship" became popularized among the public.
