Free and Clear (#4.21)

Warning: Spoilers
Joe wants to sell the restaurant and the Salingers need to decide if they sell it or buy it out. Julia and Griffin try to work on their problems, but it seems to escalate more. Claudia has a crush on the son of her family's competition.

The restaurant story wasn't surprising. I kind of predicted that it will happen. Charlie was not crazy about being there from the start. So I am glad he moves on with his life and Bailey gets the job he ended up loving so much. Am happy to see what Charlie will choose for him future and how the restaurant business works out for Bailey.

The Julia and Griffin conflict is also a good story. The thing is that I understand them both which shows how well written it is.

Turning Points Part II
tomasmmc-7719826 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
In the second part, clearly worst than the first, Joe and Charlie, without explanation, want to sell Salinger's after getting a good offer. Obviously, Claudia, Julia and Bailey are strongly opposed to this, especially Bailey who now sees a future there for him. I know that Charlie initially felt stuck or whatever in Salinger's, but since Have No Fear, I think he enjoyed it. When it got burned, or especially after Kathleen interfered, he really loved the restaurant. And after all the suffering of the family in Spring Breaks, Claudia in tears saying she would never forgive Charlie for losing it to Kathleen, Joe, Bailey and Julia mad at him for the same reasons, and Charlie himself devastated and broken for it, is impossible to believe that now he and Joe would be so cold and insensitive to sell it without doubt. In 3x14, he even said to Owen that they could manage it together. In the saddest moment of his life (3x13), Charlie spent the whole Christmas in the restaurant, helping homeless people, keeping himself busy after losing the love of his life. By the way, if Kirsten would have appeared today, she would have opposed to sell it (after all, she told him that he had to manage the place in 2x04), she would have convinced him of staying there (to have a job) or leave it to Bailey. Besides, Charlie spent many happy times with Kirsten there, like in the ending of 2x05 or his first proposal in 1x13. As for Joe, he wants to sell the place where he got married??? Fortunately, Bailey convinced them of letting him running it, and take a second mortgage in the house. Now, only the Salingers own the restaurant. It was perfect that now Bailey will manage it (he can't get another life job because his criminal record), but all the talking of Charlie and Joe wanting to sell, considering what happened in Spring Breaks and in the past, is all thrash and poor writing.

As for the rest, was kind of disappointing, Sarah helped Bailey to go and ask for the restaurant but he coldly retributed her taking her there only to say that he wants to be with Annie (Bailey is behaving like a jerk again with Sarah). Julia wants to go to college but Griffin doesn't agree, so it seems that their marriage is coming to an end. Also, Charlie now hooks up with Daphne, starting a relationship with her (and without knowing, a baby). It seems that Charlie is lost, he doesn't know what to do with his life, but he is 28 and in charge of Claudia and Owen, so this turning point for the character was handled very bad. I remember that in 6x08, thinking about his experiences of this season, he said that if he ever got out of the hospital bed alive, he wouldn't waste time in the things that didn't matter. Today, he started to waste time. He quit the restaurant completely and didn't even think about getting a new job. Instead, he changed temporarily his hairstyle and hooked up with a stripper. Maybe he needed to do one crazy thing like Kirsten agreed in Square One, but now he totally lost the right track. Imagine Social Services finding out what he's doing. That's why is kind of disappointing that after battling cancer, he didn't find a way of straight up his life. Here is when the writers commited another mistake in Charlie Salinger. Now started a period of waste, that will lead to many bad choices and actions in season 5.

The good part of the episode was that Claudia recovered some happiness, in dating Jamie Burke, a smart guy of her age, who happens to be the son of old enemies of Nicolas and Diana. The Burkes made a war to the Salingers for the restaurant, and that's why the families hated each other. At least, Julia spends time with her buying a dress.
