Separation Anxiety (#5.2)
ComedyFan20105 April 2018
Warning: Spoilers
Claudia tries not to seem to smart in her new school. Daphne leaves but then comes back because of the baby. Sarah finds out that he parents separated. Julia tells Josh that he roommates boyfriend is hers.

Good story about the baby. I really get Daphne. It is sad how he life turned not the way she wanted too, but then maybe she is just scared now and it all will go well. I also liked Charlie's experience with the lawyer where he was uncomfortable telling about Daphne being a stripper.

Finally Sarah went back to her parents. I like her character a lot, I just feel bad for her parents through the whole show the way she treats them. And now she also got this shocking news.

Julia's story was pretty fun. I liked the scene where Josh came to tell her that her "boyfriend" is cheating on her

The Wrong Moves
tomasmmc-7719826 July 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Just when Julia started well at Stanford, met a good writer guy Josh, perfect for her, and they are working together part time in a fast food shop, Bailey comes to blow it off. In season 3, Julia's messing up with Cooper led Bailey to Callie and the dorm that would be his path to alcoholism. Now, Bailey forced Julia to quit her job with Josh, inadvertently pushing her to the arms of the wrong guy, Ned. It's incredible how things worked out in this series. Bailey did the wrong move here. On the other hand, Sarah's wrong move since 4x04 by ignoring her parents, now causes her full regret and sadness, after learning their separation. She reaches her mother, who tells her this and that she wrote her in letters how the marriage was failing. Then, he reaches her father outside his new place (he moved out), and pleads him to try fixing things with her mother, but he says he can't. He admits he lost what he thought was a marriage and that he lost Sarah too, for one thing. He tries to comfort her saying that some people grow up like her and other people change. Still, like any son/daughter in her situation, she wants her parents together, but now it's too late to fix things. It's not clear what happened between them, but is sure that now her mother is with another man. By the way, in 3x06, when Sarah was worried because her mother broke her hip, her father told her by the phone that she was on painkillers and that she couldn't go to the bathroom herself for weeks. The conversations of that episode imply that Mr. And Mrs. Reeves had a strong marriage, as he took care of her in those hard moments, even when Sarah was in the East Coast visiting different colleges. So in some ways, their current separation comes out of nowhere. Seems like Sarah's decision to leave, and her refusal to talk to them was a factor, but still it's hard to explain. Then, it's sad that Mr. Reeves said "none of us has a family anymore" because this implies that he thinks he lost Sarah for good. But despite the separation, Sarah still could spend time with him if she wanted. He still is her dad, the one who raised her. Anyway, at the end, Bailey comforts her, as he shares similar feelings, wishing he could go home any day and see his parents together watching TV. Now she feels like her home is lost. Poor Sarah, the Salinger's bad luck really reached her.

As for Charlie, now with Claudia gone, he is alone in the house with Owen. Fortunately, Kirsten is around to help, taking care of her once son (inbetween seasons 1-2-3). Also, she still worries about Claudia and plans to send her paperback of musicians and her favourite foods like peanut butter pretzels in pack. This is a clear evidence that supports what I said in my review of 4x17, Kirsten loves Claudia and Owen as if they were her own childs, so she is the one who took care of them since that episode, at least during the day, while Paul worked in the hospital. Anyway, Charlie is still worried about his baby and freaks out about Daphne's situation, while Kirsten listens to him and calms him down. He makes the wrong move by going to a lawyer, Levitton, (who is not Emmett I don't know why), who tells him that he must get a job first before she starts a case. He goes to an architecture firm where he meets an old friend who used to visit him at Salinger's, and is offered a 2 year internship. Charlie rejects it because he has no more time to study and have an unpaid job. He goes for a medical appointment to the doctor that Daphne was supposed to attend, but she doesn't show up. Later, in the Ghirardelli square, Charlie calls the lawyer trying to use that absence to build a case, but she again tells him to get a job. Probably pulling strings from people in Grant high school, he gets a job as shop teacher in some local school, and when he tells Bailey, his brother downplays it offering to pay for an architecture career. Charlie refuses saying he must be responsible for his baby. Then, he tells the lawyer bad stuff about Daphne, including the stripping job, to win eventual custody. After that, he reaches Kirsten and Owen outside where she parked the car, and tells her what happened, he says he regrets it, and she remembers Jerry Springer show, and how people laugh about painful and unbelievable secrets. She agrees that is wrong but suggests that he had no choice. Anyway, this visit to a lawyer, will lead to some files that will cause even more doubts in Daphne, and hurt Kirsten in the future. Besides, finally Daphne returns to the house and Kirsten tells Charlie that she is sitting in the backyard. There, Daphne explains to him that she really doesn't want to be there, that it's obvious they are not right for each other, but she realized she can't go through the final stages of her pregnancy alone, without no one worrying about her (she spent this episode in different places, like some batterist friend guy's basement, Dave, who didn't take care of her). She doesn't have any place else to go. This proved that going to a lawyer was unnecessary. The only good thing was that made Charlie get a job as shop teacher. Still, it's hard to believe that Charlie has been doing a few carpentry jobs in the summer, it's like with 28 years old and in charge of Claudia and Owen, he spent 5 months unemployed and under Bailey's insurance. What happened, Social Services didn't visit during that time? Anyway, to finish, there's Claudia's part: she tries to fit in her new school without changing herself and meets new friends. She proves to be good at chemistry class and seems to be a little happy. Surely she calls home regularly and probably talks to Kirsten, Owen or Charlie. A good episode overall, not great, just good.
