- A young man rides an apartment building's elevator up, but another man has opened an upper floor elevator door with a knife, stopping the elevator, then jumps on the roof of the elevator, opens the escape door, and shoots the young man. After the murder Edie's friend Lynn Martel, also a nightclub singer, begins to drink uncontrollably. Edie asks Peter Gunn to help Lynn out, and Gunn discovers that Lynn's club is controlled by mobsters.—David Stevens
- Prologue: Two shots through a silencer from above in an elevator killing a man with the murderer escaping. Beautiful singer, a great voice performing in club with Pete at the bar suddenly she stops and exits stage, is found by Pete crying in dressing room. Pete says he is a friend of Edie's and he is wanting to console the lady singer, while Babe Santano, club owner, threatens Pete with language and a knife; Pete exits the dressing room. Pete is in Jacobi's office learning Babe is playing watch dog for Nat Krueger, the man killed in elevator was Roger Dwyer, who was seeing Lynn Martel, the singer. Jacobi cannot get Martel to talk, warning Pete not to fool with Krueger. Pete uses key to enter Mother's, says hi to owner, hi to Barney, hi to Emmett, tells Edie he saw her friend; they sit aside, Edie says Martel never used to drink, Pete says she is scared stiff. Lynn is alone at table drinking, club closed, Pete asks about Nat Krueger, Nat appears with Babe, confrontation develops, Pete slugged by Babe, Nat's pistol drawn, Babe's blade at Pete's front and Nat threatens Pete with shooting him if needed to keep him away. Pete enters the Plaza Apartments, goes to #401, rings bell, finally breaks in, wakes Lynn on couch in an attempted suicide. Pete turns fireplace gas off, revives her, tells her life is better than she believes and learns from Lynn that Santano killed Dwyer and Nat gave the order. Nat treats her like he owns her, and she is frightened of him. Pete tells her to get her coat, he's taking her to Edie's. Car pulls up in front of the apartment with Nat, Babe, Nat's thug driver. Babe enters the building while plain-clothes Sgt. calls Jacobi from police curbside phone. Pete and Lynn get into elevator, Babe interrupts elevator service with his knife again, Pete asks Lynn if Roger was shot in the same elevator, she says yes when hatch opens with Babe and silencer shot by Pete, Babe falls through opening, dead. Outside the building Nat and driver are blocked by cop cars, when a shootout ensues, ending with driver dead, Nat cuffed, arrested by Jacobi; cop down, ambulance called. Returning to sing at club is Lynn with Pete and Edie table-side enjoying the beautiful singer sing her last number at the club, per Pete.
