- A heavyset man trudges down a quiet neighborhood street, into a dark house, flips on the light-switch, spurring a large group of family and co-workers to yell "Surprise !" It's his birthday, and he generously volunteers to pick up the pizza for the celebration. He's the reform leader of a stevedores' union - when he switches on his car's ignition, the car explodes. The obvious suspect is a mobster who muscles into unions, so the gangster hires Peter Gunn to find the real killer, before the docks explode too.—David Stevens
- Season 1 Episode 16 The Fuse Prologue: The husband comes home after work to a dark house only to be surprised by all with a Happy Birthday. Pizza has been ordered and the same man insists on going to get the pizzas, he gets the car keys from his wife, says he won't be gone long, turns the keys in the ignition switch and the car explodes killing him. We see all in the hospital awaiting news on the victim Carlo Matzi. Jacoby and Pete are there too, and are discussing suspect number one, Jake Lynch. Carlo was a union boss, and ran it honestly, per Jacoby. Jake is a hood, Vince Cano warns Jacoby the streets will run blood if Lynch isn't convicted for this killing, brother Sal Matzi, is positive it was Lynch, knowing he wants to take over the union. Pete, meanwhile, is escorted to a vehicle by a man concealing a pistol, and is brought to a steam room to meet with Lynch. The Matzi family and others saw Pete get into the Lynch vehicle. Lynch knows the killing would point to him, and he wants Pete to find the killer fast, because anyone who comes after him will be slapped down. Pete doesn't like Lynch and told him while Lynch denies any part of the murder. At Mother's, Pete is talking to the owner finding out if the waterfront is threatened then her place goes too. Jacoby walks in, asking Pete if he is working for Jake Lynch, because Sal Matzi saw him get into the car headed to the steam room. Jacoby warns Pete of the danger working for Lynch due to Pete finding the real killer, exonerating Lynch, Pete killed as collateral damage or simple excess baggage. Pete tells the lieutenant how he feels about Lynch or his kind. Jacoby leaves, Edie heard it all, says I wonder what it would be like going a whole day without worrying about you. Phone rings, it's Benny, he wants to meet asap, Pete exits, runs into Sal, they discuss Lynch with him ordering Pete to stay out of this or you're going to get hurt. On the waterfront where Benny directed Pete to meet him, Pete finds Benny, dead, and he is attacked by two assailants, Sal is nearby, helps punch out the thugs. Pete explains it wasn't Lynch, but these guys are from the killer's side, Carlo and Benny are gone and Pete is getting too close. Sal picks up one of the thugs, demanding who hired you, tell or I'll beat it out of you. The thug said it was Maria Matzi who paid them to scare you off. Sal says his own wife! Pete tells Sal to back off, let him handle it, there's someone with Maria behind this, and Pete intends to find out whom. Pete calls Maria, tells her papers in Carlo's office will tell it was either Lynch or somebody else that killed her husband. Pete asks to meet her at Carlo's office, and bring the office keys; afterwards, he calls Jacoby. Pete meets her at the warehouse, he secures the door open with a matchbook, Jacoby pulls up at the warehouse, Pete goes into the office with Maria, Vince Cano is waiting for them, pulling a gun on Pete. Vince walks Pete out of the office at gunpoint, Jacoby says drop it, Vince knocks crates over and runs. Jacoby cuffs Maria to a pipe just out of the office. After a chase among the warehouse crates, Vince falls from the stack he was on to the floor, Vince is secured by Pete, and Maria cuffs removed from the pipe and both are walked out. Pete enters his apartment, Edie comes out of the kitchen with wine and glasses, the phone rings, it's Lynch, proud to tell he was innocent, Pete brushes the hood off, because it is time to picnic.
