Many people will remember Jim Backus as the voice of Mr. Magoo or Thurston Howell from "Gilligan's Island". So imagine my surprise when I saw him on "Police Story"...a tough and realistic show about the various jobs and hazards of being a cop! Since there is no summary currently on IMDB, I had no idea if he was playing a cop, a villain or something else...and I sure wanted to know!
Despite the title, this is the first episode with Joe Forrester (Lloyd Bridges), although Bridges did play a different character in one other episode. In this case 'return' refers to Joe being back on the beat...something he seems particularly good at doing. In fact, despite his age, he seems great at the job! This show ended up being a pilot for a made for TV movie and an eventual series called "Joe Forrester"--starring Bridges as the same character he plays here. Considering how much I enjoyed this episode, I am glad they decided to make follow-ups...I just wish I knew where I could see them (they are NOT on YouTube, at least not now).
By the way, although the opening credits on the show list Dane Clark, Tom Drake, Charles Drake and Edie Adams, none are listed on IMDB for this episode...even though all are established stars. Odd...especially since they are important folks in the show. A bunch of others are also omitted.
