Quotes
-
Doreen Burns : I could do with a mate at the moment.
Ann Reynolds : Well, let me see... do you know Helen Smart?
Doreen Burns : Oh do I ever! You should've heard the things we used to get up to. Probably the best person I could see.
Ann Reynolds : Well, there you are then.
Doreen Burns : Oh beauty! Is she here now? Can I visit her?
Ann Reynolds : Yes, of course... will you see to it, Mr Manning?
Doreen Burns : You know, you're alright Mrs R, especially for a Governor!
-
Helen Smart : Now what's the matter, Doreen? If you're feeling sentimental about this dump things can't be too good on the outside.
Doreen Burns : Yeah... well... I have got a bit of a problem.
Helen Smart : Can I help?
Doreen Burns : I don't think anyone can. You see... I'm gonna get married.
Helen Smart : That's good news, isn't it?
-
[Joan and Doreen have just encountered each other in the reception]
Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson : What are you doing here?
Doreen Burns : God... I'd forgotten about you! It's funny how you only remember the good things, eh?
Joan 'The Freak' Ferguson : [scoffs] No doubt you'll be back here soon... so you can refresh your memory.
Doreen Burns : You never know... you might be right, Miss Ferguson. You just keep that welcome mat out for me, wont you?
[she turns and leaves]

[Doreen is filling Helen in on her new choice of career - as a prostitute]
Doreen Burns : I know what I'm doing, Helen. Just five or six weeks in this place and he'll be gone.
Helen Smart : Look, he cannot be as bad as getting back in the nick! Why don't you just marry him? Love's more comfortable the second time round!
[they both laugh - though only Helen's laughter seems genuine]
Doreen Burns : Oh, Helen... No come on, just give me a few hints just to get me back in here for a few weeks...
Helen Smart : You're on your own, Doreen. I'm not contributing to the delinquency of a raving nut.
