- Number 6: I'm going to escape, come back, wipe this place off the face of the Earth, obliterate it and you with it
- Number Two: [they are having tea in Number Two's office] I can never remember... one lump or two?
- Number Six: It's in the file.
- Number Two: Yes, as a matter of fact yes! But it would save time if you would just answer the question!
- Number Six: Why, are you running out of time?
- [first lines]
- Woman Over Loudspeaker: Good morning, good morning, good morning. And what a lovely day it is. Rise and shine, rise and shine! Before our program of early-morning music, here are two announcements. The long-range weather forecast is that the fine spell will continue for at least another month. Your local council - and remember it is *your* local council, democratically elected by you - have decided to organize a great new competition. Can you paint? Can you draw? Can you model in clay? If you can, then your day is just six weeks today. More about this later, but now: music.
- [last lines]
- Nadia: You were right about him.
- Number Two: I told you.
- Nadia: Don't worry. It was a good idea, and you did your best. I'll stress it in my report.
- Number Two: Do you still think you can escape, Number Six?
- Number Six: Oh, I'll do even better than that.
- Number Two: Oh?
- Number Six: Going to escape and come back.
- Number Two: Come back?
- Number Six: Escape, come back, wipe this place off the face of the Earth, obliterate it, and you with it.
- Number Two: If I turn her over to you, you'll do some woodwork for me, is that your deal?
- Number Six: The best you'll get.
- Number Two: Ha ha! You really are the limit, Number Six!
- Number Six: Would you like to explain to me how a man in Poland came to have a watch showing English time when there's one hour's difference?
- Colonel J.: Maybe he was slow.
- Number Six: I'll bet he was.
- [Number 2 is describing the Village]
- Number Two: What in fact has been created? An international community. A perfect blueprint for world order. When the sides facing each other suddenly realize that they're looking into a mirror, they'll see that this is the pattern for the future.
- Number 6: The whole world as the Village?
- Number Two: That is my dream. What's yours?
- Number 6: To be the first man on the moon.
- Colonel J.: Let's start at square one, shall we? First, why did you resign?
- Number Six: It was a matter of conscience.
- Number Two: Don't worry, Number Six... you'll be cured. I'll see to it. No more nightmares. If you have so much as a bad dream, you will come whimpering to tell it to me. *Whimpering!*
- Number Two's Assistant: He'll crack.
- Number Two: Perhaps. One tiny piece at a time. I don't want a man of fragments!
- Number Two's Assistant: He doesn't even bend a little.
- Number Two: That's why he'll break. It only needs one small thing. If he will answer one simple question, the rest will follow: Why did he resign?
- Nadia: You really know what I want? To hear the chimes of Big Bill.
- Number Six: Big Ben.
- Nadia: I'll never call you anything else.
- Number Six: Good night, Nadia.
- Nadia: Good night, Big Ben.
- Number Six: Big Bill.
- Number Six: I risked my life and hers to come back here, home, because I thought it was different. It is, isn't it? A bit different?
- [Big Ben is chiming]
- Colonel J.: Question one, why did you resign?
- Number Six: I resigned because, for a very long time I s... Just a minute. Eight o'clock.
