When Bert is dancing with Irene, he mentions that he hadn't danced in a long time. Not only is Russ Tamblyn a fine dancer, but he played Riff in the ballet heavy West Side Story (1961).
Al tells Sam in the year 5734 (in the Hebrew Calendar) Irene will have an affair and ruin her life. This does correlate to the Gregorian calendar date of February 2, 1974. On Saturday, February 2nd, the Torah portion would have been the Parashat Beshalach - the 16th weekly Torah portion, from Exodus 13:17 - 17:16 where God parts the Red Sea for Moses and the Israelites fleeing from Egypt then closing the sea on Pharaoh's army. The haftarah for Beshalach tells the story of Deborah. At 52 verses, it is the longest haftarah portion.
Al learned several Jewish customs from his 3rd wife, Ruthie. She taught him the Hamotzi (Blessing over the bread) and how to sort-of dance the Hora. She also made "the best" gefilte fish.
This episode takes place in Los Angeles, California from February 2 to February 4, 1974.
The title refers to the first words that start some of the biblical Ten Commandments.
