The detective agency of Randall and Hopkirk could never afford, to be choosy in the choice of business that they had to accept, with the tragic demise of his partner Marty Hopkirk, Jeff Randall is even more sorely pressed not to be particularly picky.

This is possibly if not probably the rationale for Jeff Randall, accepting an incredibly peculiar business assignment from a solicitor, named Mr Laverick who has represented a rather eccentric, old biddy Mrs Wentworth Howe for some years past.

The particular eccentricity of Mrs Wentworh Howe involves her family estate, worth a tidy sum to the prospective family claimants of a Mrs Howe, James Howe, Colonel Chalmers, and Sandra Joyce.

The specific legal peculiarity however involves the aviary, of precious and valuable prize birds, that the deceased has tied up in her estate, such that they effect the relatives potential inheritances.

Marty Hopkirk and Jeff Randall have over the years had an ongoing barney, over who of the two of them were the better detective, unfortunately we don't get any chance to assess, just how good a detective Marty Hopkirk ever was, as he is murdered in the first episode.

We do however get plenty of opportunities to assess Jeff Randall's abilities, of detecting and this episode gives more examples of it, they include a supreme lack of judgement, with the ability to be easily sidetracked especially by a pretty face.
