- Flamboyant Jud Hammerklein (Broderick Crawford), a town founder and the richest and most popular man in town, is convicted of premeditated murder of the card sharp who murdered Jud's son in a quarrel over a $6.00 poker pot. He is sentenced to hang in a few days. Jud proudly admits to murdering the card sharp, and all agree --including the judge-- that every man in town would have done the same thing. But the judge says times have changed, and he justifies his sentence as promoting respect for the law. Jud even agrees with the jury's verdict and the judge's sentence, and he says he won't escape from jail. What Jud is counting on is that no one in town will execute him, and so he will go free after the appointed time of execution. Jud's sons have waylaid and buried Hannibal H. Plew (Burgess Meredith), the state's professional executioner, who is miraculously unearthed alive by Favor's drovers. Plew returns the favor by helping Hey Soos, one of the drovers, recover from a snake bite. Wishbone and Mushy escort Plew to town. Jud, getting worried for the first time, offers Plew money to leave town, but he refuses. There the episode ends, to be concluded in the following episode.—chipe
