Clint Eastwood stars in this Rawhide episode which takes him away from the herd and on the trail where his horse falls and he has to be shot. Young Joseph Hoover saves him and then makes a strange request. He asks that Clint bring him in alive and then get the reward money for him and turn it over to his wife. But then Hoover is shot in the back from a distance and Clint gets to turn a cadaver over.
As we know from watching enough westerns bounty hunters aren't socially desirable especially when they engage in legalized back shooting. Clint is a very unpopular fellow with everyone including Sheriff Slim Pickens who is rather reluctant to help Eastwood out. The only one who is at least superficially friendly is Louis Hayward who happens to be both the Wells Fargo agent supervising the payment of the reward and he also happens to have been the father of Hoover's bride Holly McIntire.
This episode is nicely staged so you feel right along with Eastwood that something is not right in the whole picture. How much is wrong is considerable.
