"The Pit" plays out as a mystery in which an entire town is guilty of conspiracy. Johnny Yuma arrives with Charity Brunner (Olive Sturgess, previously seen in "The Scavengers"), wife of his former wartime buddy Leo Brunner, along with their baby son, to find the whereabouts of Leo's rich silver mine. Everywhere Yuma goes the townspeople remain tight lipped and nervous, particularly county clerk McCowan (Myron Healey) and the assayer (Ned Glass). McCowan's hotheaded son Slip (Ralph Reed) goes so far as to provoke the rebel, earning a shot in the leg for his troubles (a young Steve Franken plays his taunting friend). Only at the very end does McGowan reveal the ultimate fate of Leo Brunner, the man tasked with shooting Yuma in the back to retain their secret. Victor Izay (previously seen in "The Promise") pops in for the final scene, as a preacher quoting scripture to explain the title: "whoso diggeth the pit shall fall therein, and he that rolleth a stone it will return upon him. A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it...we have left undone those things which we ought to have done, and we have done those things which we ought not to have done, but we have tried to make amends, and so have been forgiven."
