Hit and miss episode from a show missing one of it's best characters
snoozejonc21 December 2020
The crew find themselves trapped in Lister's room due to engine failure and make their way out via the service ducts.

This is a hit and miss episode for me with decent character moments but most of the jokes unfortunately miss the mark and the banter largely feels forced.

There isn't much to comment on in terms of a plot, because the focus is meant to be the banter between characters. I liked how it they take the opportunity to explore Kochanski's character a bit more and it does have some good fish-out-of-water humour involving her. I also enjoyed the story Lister tells Cat about one of his younger 'sexcapades', but the script overall isn't consistently strong enough.

One of the biggest problems for me is the absence of Chris Barrie. Rimmer was a fantastic character and the chemistry between Lister, Cat, Kryten, Holly (both versions) and him worked superbly well. Also, Kryten's character has been changed as a reaction to Kochanski's presence in a way that does not work. Whereas previously Robert Llewelyn was one of the funniest performers on the show, with this material he has become the most annoying. How much of this is down to Rob Grant not being involved in the writing I have no idea, but whatever the reason, the whole dynamic just seems to be off.

In this type of episode there is no real plot, action or sci-fi concept for the characters to hide behind and they have to be excellent or it ends up feeling distinctly below average. Craig Charles, Danny-John Jules and Chloe Annette do well the material they have, but for me the show does not feel the same as it once was.

As always though I accept the fact that comedy is in the eye of the beholder, so others may find it funnier than I did.
