It is commonly held that in Roman gladiator fights thumbs down meant death. That whole notion dates back to a 15th century painting where the artist based his painting on historic descriptions and had translated the Latin phrase for 'thumb turned' as 'thumb down'. Many scholars now think that interpretation is wrong.
