- Because of a terrible drought the railroad has sent two men into North Fork to recruit workers. But when a water-witch gives the people hope, the railroad takes a different approach.
- Because of a drought, many local cowhands are forced to take construction jobs building a railroad. However, when an old man claims that he has found a way to make rain, the railroad company--afraid that their workers will leave the job and go back to their ranches if they believe the old man--are determined to stop him.—frankfob2@yahoo.com
- A severe drought has hit the North Fork area and many of the men are thinking of giving up their land for a year and going to work for the railroad. Lucas isn't one of them, urging his fellow ranchers and farmers to ride it out saying the land is something that they need to hold dear and to care for and nurture. The railroad men are none too pleased when an old man, Jonas Epps, claims to have the power to find find water with a divining rod. Lucas doesn't like it one bit, remembering that as a young lad, his family lost a good deal of money to charlatans who had promised the same thing. He does take sympathy on the old man and offers him a place to stay. Whether he can find water however, remains to be seen.—garykmcd
