- In North Fork, Lucas McCain meets town drunk Micah Torrance who at one time was considered one of the most capable lawmen in the territory. He confesses that he lost his nerve and it led him to a life of drink. Lucas offers him a job as a ranch hand and uses a tough-love approach to get him to sober up. - Lucas is in town when Micah Torrance, an ex-marshall stumbles out of the saloon. Realizing who it is (a well known ex lawman) Lucas convinces Micah to come to his ranch and help him build a corral. But because he injured his arm during a shootout long ago he now feels useless. His alcoholism also rears its ugly head at dinner time. Micah begs Lucas to saddle him a horse so he can go into towwn for a drink. Lucas refuses and tells him he'll have to walk back to town if he wants to go back Lucas then explains to Mark what is wrong with Micah. Micah soon comes back in and starts eating. Meanwhile, the Shelten boys and Lloyd Carpenter check into the hotel. The Shelton boys cause a lot of damage at the saloon and have to pay for it. The next day they go to kill Micah at the McCain Ranch, but Lucas is there and stops it from happening. Micah knows he can no longer stay at the ranch because it would endanger Mark, so he agrees to leave the next day. That afternoon while in the saloon, Lloyd kills Marshal Thomlinson. Upon hearing of the marshal's murder, Lucas loads his rifle and headss to town for a confrontation. Micah tells him he shouldn't go by himself. Lucas sreplies sarcastically, "Maybe you'd like to come with me?" Micah bows out and Lucas leaves alone. After Mark calls Micah a coward, Micah realizes what his life has become and has an epiphany. He empties a sack containing a sawed-off shotgun and loads it with shot-slugs and rides in to back up Lucas. When Lucas gets there,he confronts and shoots Flory. Then as he confronts Lloyd, Andrew shoots Lucas from behind. As Andrew goes to finish off the job the roar of a shotgun is heard and Andrew is blown away. It's Micah! Then Micah and Lloyd have a showdown and Micah shoots and kills him. Lucas is bandaged up before Mark takes him off to care for his wounds.
