THE RIFLEMAN –The Pitchman – 1960

This is the 80th episode from the 1958 to 1963 western series, THE RIFLEMAN. Over the course of 168 episodes we follow the life of Lucas McCain and his son, Mark. They have moved to the small western town of North Fork where they hope to start a new life. Chuck Connors headlines the series with Johnny Crawford as his son. Connors is a world class hand with a Winchester rifle which of course ends up getting him in no end of trouble.

Snake oil salesman and all round con man Bob Sweeny and his son, Danny Richards, hit Chuck Connors ranch. Sweeny tries to sell Connors a lightning rod while Richards trades some goods with Connors' son, Johnny Crawford. Richards mistakes a bit of fool's gold Crawford has for the real deal.

Richards tells his father about the "gold" and Sweeny makes an offer to buy the mineral rights to his ranch. Connors knows that Sweeny is a low down type but agrees to sell a small bit of his ranch mineral rights for 500 dollars.

The next day Sweeny has Crawford take him out to the creek where he found the "shiny rocks'. Entering the picture now are, Paul Wexler and John Milford. They have been trailing Sweeny to exact some revenge. It seems that Sweeny sold their father some snake oil cure all that made their father deathly sick.

The two catch Sweeny and Crawford and make ready to string them Sweeny up from the nearest tree. It is only the timely arrival of Connors that saves Sweeny from becoming buzzard bait. After chasing Wexler and Milford off, Connors has a good laugh about selling Sweeny a plot of fool's gold. But being a good guy he returns Sweeny's cash. This rather weak episode is lifted up by the quite charming Sweeny, as the smooth talking con man.

The Rifleman: The Pitchman
Scarecrow-8827 November 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Father and son pitchman team, Speed and Swifty (Bob Sweeney and Danny Richards, Jr.) traveling through the homestead of the McCains (Chuck Connors and Johnny Crawford) have two disgruntled customers on their tale. The Watsons (John Milford and Paul Wexler) are out for revenge due to a supposed elixir killing their pa. While Speed tries to con Lucas (Connors) for supposed great mineral properties on his land (and sell him a lightning rod that would probably never arrive), the Watsons are on the horizon. As Speed and Lucas' son, Mark (Johnny Crawford), are riding about looking at the property around the McCain homestead, the Watsons arrive, taken them hostage with lynching on the mind, just needing to find the right noose. Can Lucas intervene in time? Fun casting of Sweeney as an unflappable salesman and Richards as his equally opportunistic son are what makes this episode a charmer. Lucas is wise to Speed's chicanery and teaches him a lesson. Even when the Watsons enter into the picture, this is a lighthearted affair. Connors and Sweeney are fun together during "negotiations".
