A Tale of Two Parties
Tweekums1 February 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Having left the legion Lucius Vorenus is planning his civilian life as a trader of goods and slaves from Gaul; to this end he has his wife throw a party for businessmen; unfortunately it doesn't go well as Niobe's sister disturbs the proceedings. Meanwhile Atia is throwing an altogether more lavish party to welcome her uncle Gaius Julius Caesar home. Elsewhere Pompey learns that the treasury has fallen into the hands of Caesar's scouts but has not been given to Caesar; he sends his son Quintus to find out what happened to it. Quintus confronts Vorenus but he has no knowledge of any gold… until Pullo turns up throwing money around before turning the tables on Quintus! Vorenus orders Pullo to tell Caesar about the gold immediately. Shortly after learning about the gold Caesar orders its retrieval; he then orders that Quintus should be released so that he can take an offer of a truce to his father; a truce Caesar knows Pompey won't accept. Shortly after that we learn that Caesar suffers from epilepsy and is also involved with Servilia.

This isn't the most action packed episode but it is still enjoyable; it serves to show us the problems Caesar is having trying to run the city with limited funds without resorting to taking money off the people. We also see politics at play as Caesar tries to drive a wedge between Pompey and his allies with the offer of a truce that offends him but may be acceptable to others. There is some tension when Quintus threatens Vorenus and his wife. The two parties were fun to watch as both Caesar and Vorenus are clearly using the events to make alliances. As expected the cast do a great job; what really impresses is that even the relatively small parts are played so well. Overall another fine episode that advances the plot nicely.
