Georg Stanford Brown: Officer Terry Webster

Quotes

  • Officer Terry Webster : [Officers Chris Owens and Terry Webster respond to a call involving a car accident. 19-year-old Karen Austin, who was running down the roadway against traffic, was hit by an oncoming car coming around a curve. After arriving at the scene, Officer Webster kneels on the pavement next to where the injured young woman is lying. He's holding her hand in his right hand and is shading her eyes from the sun with his left hand. He sees that she's in great pain and his facial expression shows his deep concern for her. He has begun offering quiet, soothing words of comfort to her in an effort to help her relax]  Take it easy, baby, ahhh, it's gonna be alright... take it easy...

Karen Austin : [Karen has been covered by a blanket and is writhing in pain. When she speaks, she's whimpering in agony]  It hurts... please make it... stop.

[She looks imploringly at Officer Webster, pleading with her eyes for him to help her]

Officer Terry Webster : [Officer Webster is now squeezing her hand, and continuing his soft, comforting words to her, trying to help her relax. He looks at their intertwined hands then speaks softly]  Well, just go ahead and squeeze this big paw if you want... as hard as you want... ok?

[as he continues speaking to Karen, he's looking gently into her eyes]

Karen Austin : [By now, Karen is writhing more vigorously and trying not to cry. She's grasping Officer Webster's hand tightly in her own, intermittently squeezing it, trying in vain to calm herself. She is in great distress and seems oblivious to Officer Webster's attempts to console her]  Help me... please help me...

Officer Terry Webster : [Officer Webster, feeling great sympathy for Karen, continues looking into her eyes. He smiles at her gently, as he's hoping he will succeed in calming her down]  Look, an ambulance is on the way and you're gonna have a doctor soon... ok?

[Officer Webster smiles gently at Karen encouragingly]

Karen Austin : [the girl's gaze is fixated on Officer Webster's eyes, pleading with him to stay with her]  Don't leave me... don't...

Officer Terry Webster : [Officer Webster is still kneeling beside the girl and his hand is over her forehead, shading her eyes from the sun. He is letting her continue to squeeze his hand]  I won't leave you... I'm not gonna leave you...

[Officer Webster's soft, gentle voice gradually lowers to a whisper]

Karen Austin : [Karen, with tears in her eyes, is staring at Officer Webster intently. She knows he wants to help her and she is valiantly trying to convey a message to him]  Tell my mother... that I... that I... didn't...

[Karen's voice trails off as she struggles to speak]

Officer Terry Webster : [Officer Webster's face shows his compassion for the injured girl. He really wants to help her and replies in a very soft, low voice, encouraging her to try to talk to him]  What?... What?

Karen Austin : [Karen starts gasping and crying and is having trouble speaking. She's staring intently at Officer Webster, determined that she makes him understand what she's trying to tell him. Her eyes beg him to understand]  That Jimmy... that I didn't do... what Jimmy did...

Officer Terry Webster : [Officer Webster is raptly listening to what Karen is saying to him, although he doesn't grasp what she means. His eyebrows are drawn together, clearly showing the concern he feels for her]  Ok... ok... ok... alright...

[Officer Webster is speaking in a whisper as Karen, exhausted in her effort to speak, closes her eyes and drifts off. Officer Webster tenderly puts his hand on the side of her face before rising to his feet]

  • Lt. Ed Ryker : [Lt. Ryker and Officer Chris Owens are at the cemetery. They are standing some distance from Officer Terry Webster and Mrs. Austin, who is kneeling by Karen's grave; Terry is standing next to her]  You can be proud of what you did, Owens, the two of you.

Officer Chris Owens : [Chris looks at Lt. Ryker]  Ah, not me, Lieutenant. Terry. He's the one who really cared.

Lt. Ed Ryker : [Lt. Ryker looks upward, reflecting on Chris's statement]  Yeah, I guess he's his brother's keeper, all right. He just couldn't stand the thought of that girl remaining Jane Doe #4 and he just wouldn't quit until he'd given her back her own identity.

    [Ryker looks back at Chris]

Lt. Ed Ryker : He's a good man.

Officer Chris Owens : [Chris is deep in thought as he looks toward Terry and Mrs Austin, who are now walking up the path]  Yeah. I also think he gave her more than an identity... immortality, maybe. Someone who cared enough about her not to forget.

Officer Terry Webster : [Terry is holding Mrs Austin's arm as they are walking up the path. He is reflecting on his earlier conversation about Karen]  She touched me... she reached out... she asked me to help her. Do you want me to pretend she didn't happen? 'Cause, if that's what life has to be about, then it's nothing more than a joke. And the joke just happens to be on every one of us...

  • Officer Terry Webster : [Officer Terry Webster is sitting in Lt. Ryker's office. He is telling Lt. Ryker his feelings on when he was helping the car accident victim, Karen Austin, and his frustration on the indifference of the police system]  I know, that's what life's all about. You live, you die, and in the end, you're just one of bazillions that passed through.

[Terry sighs and lowers his eyes, deeply emotional]

Officer Terry Webster : She touched me... she reached out... we had a moment. She asked me to help her.

[Terry gets to his feet, and leans over the desk to face the Lieutenant]

Officer Terry Webster : Now Lieutenant, do you want me to pretend she didn't happen? 'Cause, if that's what life has to be about, then it's nothing more than a joke... and the joke just happens to be on every one of us...

  • Officer Terry Webster : [Officer Terry Webster is questioning Charlie Phillips about his involvement with Karen Austin. Terry's voice is flat and he is staring fixedly at Charlie]  I know... that Mickey was your connection. I also know... that you doped Karen's food.

[Terry hesitates a moment before continuing]

Officer Terry Webster : That's a felony. I also know... that you drove her up to the hills. Did you try to rape her? That's also a felony.

[Terry continues gazing at Charlie; his eyes don't waver]

Charlie Phillips : [Charlie shouts back at Terry]  That's a lie! I never touched her!

Officer Terry Webster : [Terry starts to raise his voice]  She ran, she was scared. She was sick. She didn't know where she was going!

Charlie Phillips : [Charlie jumps up from the pool table]  I don't have to listen to any of this, right?

Officer Terry Webster : [Terry is still staring at Charlie]  Where's your brother?

Charlie Phillips : [Charlie looks back at Terry; he is still shouting]  That's none of your business!

Officer Terry Webster : [Terry's voice is rising steadily]  She clawed someone! There were traces of skin and blood under her nails! When we find that person, it won't be hard to make that match!

Charlie Phillips : Do you see any scratches on my face?

Officer Terry Webster : [Terry is very angry and frustrated; he's now shouting very loudly at Charlie]  I never said anything about a face!

[Charlie realizes he's trapped himself in his lie and starts to stammer]
