A dull hostage crisis
pkfloydmh17 September 2021
This one is about some hoods taking over the rookies' precinct station and taking Ryker, Webster and others hostage so they can spring a couple of other hoods that are being transferred there.

The episode takes place mostly in the precinct station and consists of Vic Tayback waving his gun around and acting macho and threatening and intimidating Ryker, and everyone else just standing around waiting for the second prisoner to arrive. We also have the same old cliché where someone has been shot and is dying and needs medical attention immediately, something that has been seen an endless number of times in hostage crises on other TV shows. Then a dumb drunk arrives at the station who has nothing to do with anything but was obviously added just for filler. It's all very tedious and uninteresting and just a rehash of the same plot elements that have been seen so many times before in other hostage crises.

Because the whole episode is about the hostage crisis, the rookies aren't out on the beat investigating a crime or rounding up criminals and there are no chases of any kind, which is a huge negative.

The real highlight is at the end, where there's a really good action scene that includes a nice shootout and several good fistfights, including one involving Owens, who throws some haymakers for the very first time. There's also an action scene at the beginning when the station is first taken over but beyond these two scenes there's nothing else to recommend as it's just another typical hostage crisis like so many that have been seen before.
