The Dress Code

Jerry is a student who wears some outlandish clothes, sparking a debate about the school's outdated dress code.

One of the best and most entertaining shows of Season 1. Bud Cort plays Jerry and he would soon become a cult star in movies like "MASH", "Brewster McCloud" and "Harold And Maude". Kenneth Mars plays his dad and he has some of the funniest moments, as his character cannot seem to make up his mind on the issue. There is many good scenes of some of the kids in the then wild looking clothes of 1969. And this is the first appearance of Ta-Tanisha as Pam, a black student who would be a regular through Season 3.

Warning: Spoilers
This episode has a lot of silliness to it. Its hard for me to take it seriously because Kenneth Mars guest stars and I always think of him as the police inspector in Mel Brook's Young Frankenstein. This episode deals with the dress code at Walt Whitman which hasn't changed in over thirty years. Jerry is a good kid and fine student who nevertheless keeps getting sent to detention because of his attire (our favorite fuddy duddy good old Mister Dragon is his chief tormentor). Pete Dixon is chosen to be the head of a committee to solve the problem and there is major division between the teachers who argue this is NOT a democracy and the students who want freedom of expression. Maybe I'm an old fuddy duddy but this episode offended me because kids DO need to dress with dignity it builds character.
