The dilemma of Alice Johnson
dtucker868 October 2023
Warning: Spoilers
You have to admit Alice was a student teacher who wasn't afraid to show initiative. In this episode she boldly volunteers to direct the students musical revue. Helen, a usually painfully shy student, comes up with a HIGHLY original idea to end the production. She wants the students GASP to strip to their birthday suits just like they did in the musical Hair. Even given the fact this show was in the sixties that is still a ridiculous idea but for some reason Alice is too naive to say no. Pete sets her straight by tellling her a teacher is a leader and leadership is NOT about popularity. In the end she comes up with a clever idea to get the students to realize how foolish this is (and they still like her). In the end she wins the respect of Principal Kaufman AND we get to hear Walt Whitman's alma mater song.

The Nude Scene

Alice volunteers as new faculty advisor and is put in charge of the student revue show.

A very good episode. Karen Valentine gives a great performance. Alice tries desperately to be seen as a "groovy" teacher so she tells the kids that it is their show and can do whatever they want. Shy Helen shocks her but suggesting they all strip naked at the end of the show, like a show she read about in New York (the unnamed "Hair"). Many funny and memorable moments in this one, The Los Angeles High School Choir play a group of students who sing a "Hair" like song. Helen sings a tone deaf version of the Rolling Stones' "As Tears Go By". Pete and Liz have to tell Alice that she cannot allow the nude scene to happen. The solution she comes up with is both funny and clever.
