The Blaming of the Shrew (#7.22)

Warning: Spoilers
DJ has a date with a girl for a prom that turns out to be very bossy. Roseanne likes her but Dan is worried that she is bullying DJ so they have a talk with him after Lisa makes DJ go to Chicago. Jackie and Fred go to marriage therapist where they tell what the problems in their marriage is and try to make it better.

I loved Ashley Jones as Lisa. I couldn't stand her as Crissy Seaver on Growing pains but with this character she was awesome. She made me laugh a lot. I also like how while Dan and Roseanne believed she bullied DJ into being with her he was with her because of french kissing. And her reason to be with him was also hilarious.

And it was great to see Ellen as marriage therapist. She was fun. And I really feel for Jackie. I like how they acknowledged that they married somebody they didn't really know well. He is so boring....

Disturbing Yet So Funny

By Season 7, the genius of Seasons 3-5 had degenerated quite a bit so that I was no longer a regular viewer. Roseanne was clearly on an angry ride and couldn't quite swing the light humor that mitigated the serious subjects. This episode is a nice exception. DJ's aggressive girlfriend is just hysterical, yet her aggression is pretty disturbing. I can't quite reconcile laughing so hard at abuse like that. I guess that's what's meant by a guilty pleasure. In this mostly funny episode, you also get a delightful dose of Nineties Ellen. Worth a watch just for the line: "Who gets drunk and cuts this family's hair?"
