The first float in the parade was by the U.S. Navy to aid in publicity and recruitment. It was a model of the U.S.S. Nautilus, the worlds first atomic powered submarine. One of its more notable voyages was its transit of the North Pole submerged in 1958. The Nautillus was launched in 1954, completed in 1955, decommissioned in 1980 and designated a National Historic Landmark in 1982. The submarine has been preserved as a museum ship at the Submarine Force Library and Museum in Groton, Connecticut.
