SCTV cleans up at an awards show
Rawl Withers produces the first annual Global Golden People Choice Awards show.
The beginning of the awards show is a hilariously bad opening number with Lola Heatherton and Lorna Minnelli which the audience ignores. Guy is introduced lowered to the stage on his wheelchair but he falls out of it. ("Who rigged that thing?" he angrily asks). The Sammy Maudlin Show is named best talk show, Sammy cries uncontrollably during his speech. We see Liz Taylor (Catherine O'Hara) back stage trying to steal food (at the time she was constantly being ridiculed for gaining so much weight). She then joins Johnny LaRue to give a special effects award to SCTV for their Zontar episode. Bob Hope is angry that Guy has no place for him on the show. Bob calls in the FBI when SCTV is winning all the awards. Guy and Rawl have fixed the show so SCTV wins everything.
There is a Merv Griffin sequence where Merv is directed by Steven Spielberg (Dave Thomas). Orson Welles guests talking about War Of The World and making a sculpture out of stove top dressing. There is also parodies of Close Encounters Of The Third Kind and 2001 A Space Odyssey (with the HAL 9000 computer) worked in.
Bob and Doug have their old show back but are cut to 1 minute because of their disastrous TV special. Gil Fisher welcomes reggae group Third World and takes them antique hunting with O'Hara playing his wife Whitey. Third World performs their song Try Jah Love.
Back at the awards show, Richard Harris tries to give a speech but the audience complains they can only hear him when he does the high voice. When he does the low voice he gets hit with a brick. When Skip Bittman wins best newcomer, the audience riots. Ed Asner (John Candy) was then president of SAG and was very outspoken with his political views. He tries to get the people to all unite but Bob Hope punches him in the mouth.
The last scene shows Rawl in Melonville Penitentiary and visited by Guy. They break into song with Sometimes I Feel Like A Motherless Child.
This is one of the best episodes, essential viewing.
