SCTV spoofs The Godfather
Jimmy_the_Gent425 September 2018
One of the longest and funniest movie parodies is the SCTV version of The Godfather.

This begins with a commercial with Katherine Hepburn (Catherine O'Hara) who talks about her first time...drinking Twillings Tea.

The story gets started as LaRue and Mrs Prickley complain about not being invited to the wedding of Guy's daughter. Guy is visited by Mayberry's Floyd the Barber (Levy) who wants Opie and his thugs killed for breaking his barber pole. Guy's two sons are introduced- intelligent Michael (Moranis) and hot headed Sonny (Levy). John Candy plays Johnny Pavoratti, an opera singer who wants a part in Leonard Bernstein's new opera. Guy sends his consigliare Tom Hagen to work things out. The sketch was already very funny but becomes uproarious when John Marley (actual actor from The Godfather) shows up as Bernstein. Marley is hilarious as he recreates the horse's head scene in this. Guy then has a meeting with the 5 Network heads about buying a pay TV channel. Guy refuses and the rivals fire 600 bullets into him, though he survives. He has to take a broadcasting oath while his hit men shoot up the other networks. The Today set is destroyed with Gene Shalit and Jane Pauley ducking for cover, so is CBS Sports with Brent Musburger and Jimmy the Greek. Funniest is when SCTV news is hit and Earl screams "OH MOTHER!"

Bob and Doug talk about long underwear and frying back bacon. Dr Tongue is the host of a beef restaurant with 3D effects. Woody Tobias Jr is the waiter and Count Floyd is the MC of the show. R&B singer James Ingram is the musical guest singing his top 20 hit Just Once. He attacks Dr Tongue when he doesn't get his money.

A commercial is next for Birkney's Diamonds, O'Hara gets a diamond ring from her butch friend played by Andrea Martin. The final sketch is about Vikings joined on their ship by beekeepers. They are about to go to war when O'Hara shows up as the Goddess of Compromise, telling them to make up songs and they REALLY need to bathe.
