Fine casting

Warning: Spoilers
THE NOBLE SPORTSMAN is an engaging mystery-focused episode of THE SAINT, with the action centred around a country pile belonging to fox hunting toff Anthony Quayle. Templar is called in when attempts are made on the toff's life, and there's a long list of suspects. Although I guessed the eventual outcome, this is fun stuff indeed, with Quayle on top nasty form and a fine supporting cast featuring no less than Francis Matthews, Sylvia Sims and Jane Asher.

Nice Little Saint

Why, who's that up there with Simon?

It's Anthony Quayle, from Lawrence of Arabia and his generation's definitive Falstaff. And Sylvia Syms, who was so sexily sweaty in Ice Cold in Alex. They're a married couple but he spends too much time personally in sports.

Also in the mix is Jane Asher, erstwhile girlfriend of Paul McCartney.

Quayle is an aristocrat who wants Simon to discover who is sending him death threats. But will the Saint like the answer?

One of the better early Saints, with a top drawer cast. The fact that they can plug actors of Anthony Quayle's stature into the Saint shows how much respect the show had even this early.

Had Roger Moore not been signed for "The Saint" in 1962 they might have drawn him to being James Bond a decade earlier. I'm glad he got a chance to do "The Saint."

The Noble Sportsman

Warning: Spoilers
The Noble Sportsman has a terrific cast and an intriguing mystery at the heart of it.

Anthony Quayle is Lord Yearley. A noted sportsman especially in horse jumping. He is also an arrogant businessman who makes enemies when he refuses to sell land to a developer.

Yearley has changed his mind as his younger wife Lady Yearley (Sylvia Syms) is pregnant and Yearley is convinced that it will be a son. He wants to build a hospital instead of a supermarket.

Soon he recieves death threats and even an attempt is made on his life.

Yearley's grown up daughter Rose (Jane Asher) calls in Simon Templar. What Yearley's enemies realise that his wife has been having an affair with a young architect.

This seems a bit of a Saint lite episode. Maybe that is why the calibre of actors have been upped. Quayle very much carries the show here.

There are some plot holes here. I could not get over why Yearley would not sell the land to the developer. By the end it was certain that Yearley knew of his wife's affair, whether the baby would be his.

Only Yearley could had set up the attempts on his life so he could take revenge on his wife's lover.
